Micron CEO Warns RAM Shortages to Get Worse in 2027

Micron CEO Warns RAM Shortages to Get Worse in 2027 - News

Memory maker Micron CEO and company chair Sanjay Mehrotra during the most recent earnings call warned RAM shortages will get worse in 2027 and customers will pay a "much higher price" than this year.

"In calendar 2027 as well as 2028, we see demand exceeding supply," he said (via The Register). "In fact, we see greater tightness in the industry in 2027 and in 2028 versus 2026. Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.

He added, "We do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance."

Micron plans to bring new factories online in 2028 as it has been backed by a $25 billion capital expenditure during the first half of the new financial year. However, executives warn the facilities will take time to help improve the availability and ease prices.

The rising cost of memory and storage have forced the majority of electronics companies to raise prices. This includes console makers - Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox. Valve has also raised the prices of the Steam Deck and the Steam Machine is retailing for over $1,000.

I'm the CEO of XYZ and we make product ABC

Do to circumstances beyond our control, we will be supply constraining ABC and artificially inflating the price to keep our profits as high as possible.

Thank you

How does the manufacturer get to say that we must pay more because of shortages?

The manufacturer SHOULD be trying to makes things as fast as possible at the lowest possible price.
Only under a monopoly will the manufacturer get to say "gee, y'all REALLY want this huh? Gonna cost you!"

You are never obliged to raise your prices, just because bad actors are outbidding each other for your merchandise.

If you got in during 2025, your value went up by about 1000%.

And with the ongoing production expansion through until 2035, it’s probably still a good company to buy into… assuming there isn’t a demand crash.
