Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 bestselling games in 2007. Last week we looked at the top 10 bestselling games in October 2012 and the week before that the top 10 bestselling games on the Nintendo 64. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in in 2007, three of the games were released during that year, while seven were released in a previous year. Four of the games were released in 2006 and three were released in 2005. 2007 is also the first year to have all the current generation platforms available for the entire year. The only exception is the PlayStation 3 wasn’t released until March 2007 in Europe.
The top selling game, Wii Sports, is bundled with the Wii in every territory, except Japan. Wii Play came bundled with the Wii Remote. There was a special edition DS Lite to celebrate the North American release of Pokemon Diamond / Pearl. There was also a special edition Xbox 360 that came bundled with Halo 3. However this only accounts for some of the sales.
The top 10 bestselling games in 2007 sold a combined 66.76 million games. Wii Sports is the only game to sell more than 10 million units during the year, while the top five games sold five million or more units. Also nine of the top 10 games sold four million or more units. Mario Party 8 is the only game to sell less than four million units, but not by much.
Five of the games in the top 10 are for the DS, four are for the Wii and one is for the Xbox 360. The five DS games sold a combined 28.77 million units, or 43.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The five Wii games sold a combined 31.16 million units, or 46.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling games in 2007 as a graph really shows how bundles helped drive sales. Two of the games were bundled 100 percent of the time, while several others were bundled at some point.
There are no games on a Sony platform in the top 10 in 2007. The bestselling PlayStation 3 game in 2007 was MotorStorm at number 17 with sales of 2,448,530 units. Resistance: Fall of Man was the only other PlayStation 3 game to sell two million or more units. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 was the bestselling PSP game for the year, with sales of 1,902,717.
As a quick note here are other software sales for the year of 2007: The top 23 games sold two million or units and the top 53 sold one million or more units. Also the top 147 games sold 500,000 or more units. 109.82 million games were sold on the DS and 38.70 million games were sold on the PSP. 74.64 million games were sold on the Wii, 61.45 million were sold on the Xbox 360 and 37.18 million were sold on the PlayStation 3.
Here are the hardware sales for 2007: The DS sold 29.36 million units and the PSP sold 12.81 million units. The Wii sold 16.55 million units, the PlayStation 3 7.95 million units and the Xbox 360 7.85 million units.
