This is a really good move the X360 has a huge market in the US over 2* the Ps3 market of course they will release it for both platforms it would be stupid not to, in most respects PC,X360, PS3 and Wii can all run this game.
An even better move would be to include the Wii as well since i think that would sell even more than the X360 version if done properly.
The trick is to customise each version like the PC , Ps3, X360 or Wii have special features to differentiate them - the PC obviously gets the best graphics and highest framerate and best control system( mouse and keyboard) , the Ps3 may get extra content from blu-ray , the X360 gets the best or equal best console graphics (typically 575 or 720p) , and the Wii gets intuitive motion support.

If this particular event can happen to a franchise that has been exclusive to the platform since FF7, then this can definitely open up a whole plethora of opportunity for other franchises elsewhere. If this didn't wake the PS3 up and it doesn't get its act together then, this could very well happen again someplace else. Especially to the SE side of things again.

This single event has changed the playing field this generation and can only mean that ANYONE at this point can still win this so called, "console war!"

A few examples...

Nintendo could exchange or loan one of their IPs to Microsoft for that Pinata franchise. (If that hasn't already happened)

If Sony's act doesn't get straightened out (reason this event happened in the first place) then another SE RPG could venture outside of Sony land or another type of game for that matter. The same could happen to Microsoft with not having enough power compared to the PS3 or Nintendo for being to damn different.

Sony can go to Microsoft can steal exclusivity from them by boasting Blu-Ray's dominance and the Cell processor's power or what not.

All I'm saying is that this particular event has pretty much changed everything.

God you bots make me laugh, you are all against PS3 installs. Yet cos the 360 can install a whole game on hard drive it's better. Give me a break, 360 owners would run out of space rather quickly if this happens, as ya can't upgrade 360's hard drive above 120Gb.

It's already been said countless times by the Dev/programmer of MGS4, that it's a PS3 Exclusive. So keep dreamin bots.

My guess is that SE saw the MGS4 sales figures and figured a PS3 exclusive would not be feasible. This is great news for MS overall, potential buyers can play FFXIII on the 360 for $100 - 150 less than the competition.

Buying Games is bad? How do we know this wasn't Square-Enix's decision given the PS3's poor software sales or MGS4's mediocre debut? Why do Sony fanboys like yourself insist that Microsoft is any different from Sony? Both are faceless corporations that use gaming as a means to an end.

It's merely a fantasy that Sony's direction is anymore artistic or pure for gaming than Microsoft's is. If that were true, they never would have handicapped their console with the expensive and, as of yet, unproven Blu-Ray as well as over-engineered hardware with poor development tools. Though ironically it is all these proofs that they damned their console which fans like you insist proves their artistic integrity and their willingness to "sacrifice" for the consumer.

You people blindly recite such CEO jargon as "Future Proof", "4D Gaming" and "The PS3 being the key to Accelerating Gaming" like some cult member parroting their leader, yet when it comes like situations like this you have no motivational power phrases to adress such a matter. All you can do is say, "Uh, Well... Microsoft Buys their games!"

I think the "simultaneous release on PS3 and xbox360" misunderstanding is stemming from mixing up 2 answers of SE's prez in the Q&A session.

He clearly states in one answer that the FF13 jp version will come out first, and that the PS3 version will then enter localization and will release simultaneous in the US and EU.

In another answer he said that the work on the Xbox360 version will START when the PS3 jp version is released, and that the xbox360 version will also launch at a single date for US and EU, but not in Japan.

Clearly he is not talking about a single date for BOTH the PS3 version and the xbox360 version but only about the split releases they had in the past as FF12 was released first in the US and more than half a year later in the EU.

As far as i understand his answers we will get a schedule like this:

1) PS3 jap release ~ early to mid 2009
2) PS3 international release ~ late 2009
3) Xbox360 international release ~ mid to late 2010

It is highly unlikely that the complete development cycle for the xbox360 version would only take as long as a simple localization.

Though i think the multiplatform release will be great for SE as they broaden their potential consumer base. And you should not disregard the benefit from all that cash they get from MS for free. That makes the whole company more profitable and could lead to even better games.

The final Fantasy sales where on a decline already even with the huge installbase of the PS2. FF10 sold around 8 million units, FF12 only around 5, and that with a much larger installbase. Clearly SE was not that keen on selling FF13 to a ~ 20million installbase worldwide compared to FF12 at 100million+. They might have only sold around 1-2 million units that way and that would not nearly be enough to pay for the long development time and cost the game had.

I have never been one of those people to care who has what game mainly because i don't like the halo series or the gears of war anything. I have always stood by sony ever since i left the Nintendo fold. the games were better, funner, and just down right awesome. but since the news of this i am in shock. I don't know what this emotion is. I just don't like the fact that x box gets the game series that got me in to all games. I am disappointed at sony for not giving us everything like the other consoles have. We are still waiting on home witch suck really bad. I Just don't know sony is hurting me for the first time ever in my life. It's just not right. It's just not fair. This is good i think why not put it on all consoles there is nothing about this game which prevents it working on a 360 a Ps3 or Wii or mabey even the Ps2.
The thing about each console is each has a style of it's own -
Ps2 is cheap
Wii has motion controls,
Ps3 has huge 25 or 50gb game disks, motion and HD ,
X360 has low cost and HD.
make a version to suit each machine and let people choose which to buy.

Like GTA4 for example where
Ps3 had full screen TV viewing , and motion support.
X360 had some online extras.

One more thing, Marty, since when do you require Wi Fi cables Hard drives and wireless controllers to play Final Fantasy XIII. Maybe I missed the press release or something but you are bundling all these high end features some gamers might not want and saying that is why it is a better value when in truth the better value is being able to choose not to have things like Wi Fi if you don't need them, at the same time not to have to pay more money. @EaglesEye379 - Wrong, once you figure in all 360's extra cost's eg charge docks/cables/batteries, Wi-Fi, bigger hard drive, it's not the best solution too play Final Fantasy XIII. By a long shot. Couple that with the high chance that 360's will fail at some point(RROD). PS3 is still the way to go.

@obieslut - I mean if GTA IV sales are out too go by, the different in sales for PS3 & 360 is only 1.5 million. Which is pretty poor considering 360 has the biggest userbase. Everybody expected a wider gap, yet that has'nt been the case.

This is a big blow for sony yes but as many has said above FFXIII is still an exclusive PS3 titel in Japan. So atleast its not "worst case scenario" from my point of view anyway.

Sony still has BIG exclusive titles comming out this year:
Tekken 6 (looking forward to that one SO MUCH!!!)
God of war III
Recistance II
Little Big Planet

So the loss of FFXII as an exclusive titel for the PS3 worldwide is a big loss for sony but im not at all worried for the Future of PS3. Sony is atm selling more consoles than Microsoft and I dont think this will change drastically in the next time.

Also when people on here say that there is know reason too buy a PS3, they are just kidding themselves:

PS3 has better hardware/Build quality than 360
PS3 is far more reliable than 360
PS3 has free Online
PS3 comes with Blu-ray drive as standard
PS3 offer far more out of the box than 360 does(for very little price difference)
Once you add-on all the 360 extra's inc online subscription, 360 is'nt a good buy

Someone said the vast majority of gamers don't really play Final Fantasy. That may be true, but when your series has sold an upwards of 85 million copies and becomes the fourth bestselling video game series of all time (Mario, Pokemon and the Sims are ahead of it) I think that really says something. On a worldwide scale, Final Fantasy is very important to the gaming industry as a whole. It's massive sales have made gamers expect something of it. There's a ton of gamers who really do care about Final Fantasy all over the world. When your game sells five million worldwide and people think that isn't such a big deal, I think the expectations increase. Ever since Final Fantasy VII hit, people expect much more from the sales of Final Fantasy. Consider that a lot of people looked at the sales of Final Fantasy IX and XII and thought they were somewhat low being that they barely sold 5 million worldwide. Compare that to Final Fantasy VII selling almost twice that (9.72 million according to VGChartz) and Final Fantasy VIII and X selling over two million more copies (Both selling fairly close to 8 million copies worldwide).

Yeah, this has lit a fuse on the internet. All over the web you can find people celebrating this, people getting upset over it and people who are indifferent. This is not just something that has caught the attention of those who peruse VGChartz. Seeing as how Final Fantasy is one of the bestselling franchises in gaming history, this is news to a ton of people. Final Fantasy has a pretty large fanbase.

70% of those games don't matter to most gamers enough to buy or keep a console. The rest are Sony owned exclusives so there was never any question of them leaving.

And since FF13 wouldn't have sold any copies on the 360 in Japan anyway its no loss or gain either way.

Final fantasy XIII is still PS3 exclusive in Japan, which is where it will launch first. Also the other two Final Fantasy XIII games in the trilogy(versus and another one) are still PS3 Exclusive.

As for having PS3 only having 3 Top Exclusives remaining, keep dreamin there are loads more than 3:

More Second hand PS3's will be sold on EBay with the announcement of this news.
PS3 has only three top exclusives remaining now Tekken 6, God of War 3 and Gran Turismo 5.
It is a shame that FF XIII is no longer PS3 exclusive.

So that's it...one of the major Sony's "bombs" got busted now. Can't they negotiate a timed PS3 exclusive at least? Just think about it, Final Fantasy and Xbox? Never seen this happening and it never happened before....it just doesn't look right. Same goes for Star Ocean.

The only saving grace to this announcement is that it remains exclusive to the PS3 in Japan, but that's really the only thing Sony can cling to - perhaps keeping XIII-Versus is a positive as well.
That said, PS3 owners still get this game (Perhaps the defining version), so there really shouldn't be this kind of negative reaction.

Either way, a huge announcement from Microsoft's very deep pockets.
I wonder if we'll see Sony counter with anything notable tomorrow morning.

I can't say I am shocked, but this is a huge blow to Sony. I just wonder if the 360 version will drive s/h sales like the PS3 version. I think I'll be picking up the360 version, though.

The reality is that many Sony boosters are upset, because they made significant sacrifices to play this specific game. They purchased the most expensive console, suffered through an abysmal launch year, and have seen Sony basically neglect the genre this particular title happens to be a part of.

Meanwhile those who bet on the 360 have had an entirely different experience. They spent less, have had a fundamentally better library, and Microsoft is very committed to the roleplaying genre. Call it what you like, but Microsoft is doing what a company is supposed to do cater to the consumers desires.

I can definitely see how some would be disheartened by this turn of events. Many players who purchased the PS3 took solace in the fact that this games exclusivity somewhat balanced the scales, and perhaps justified their purchase.

While its easy to say this is good for gamers it most definitely has to hurt a Sony loyalists pride. They made a real sacrifice, and suffered greatly to ensure that they would get to play this game. Meanwhile they saw others making gluttons of themselves on that other console. Now they find that they need not have fasted in the first place.

On the bright side for those who really enjoy roleplaying games they are free to move over to the roleplaying platform, and with the new prices it should be reasonably affordable. I think in the long haul this could be a positive for those with a passion for the genre. They will no longer have to worry about being out in the cold.

By the way that last five minutes was such a terrible tease. The last speaker at a Microsoft event always unveils a game. So when he left the stage I was terribly disappointed, and then when he came back I was ecstatic. I think if the math is right we should get three RPGs on the 360 every month through the end of the year.
