True Crime: Hong Kong Picked up by Square Enix - News

Last year, Activision announced it had cancelled True Crime: Hong Kong, the third entry in the True Crime franchise, and the first to have been for current generation platforms. Now, it appears that Square Enix has picked up the publishing rights to the game.

United Front Games, the original developer before the game's cancellation (as well as last year's excellent ModNation Racers), is still the team behind the title, but it looks like the game will be getting a name change, since Activision still owns the True Crime IP rights.

True Crime: Hong Kong

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg had this to say:

Our team has worked very hard to find a solution where everybody wins. Square Enix gets the benefit of the tremendous investment we've made in the game thus far. UFG gets to stay together and complete their vision. And gamers get to play a great game. We couldn't be more thrilled.

Good to see the developers remaining in work on the project, especially given all the game designers who frequently lose their jobs once a game gets cancelled. Also nice to see no bad blood between competing publishers.

While I was never a fan of the True Crime games, Hong Kong was looking promising before its cancellation. It'll be interesting to see how the title goes forward now that it officially isn't a True Crime game anymore.

This game has been picked up by SE London Studios. The same people that brought us Batman: Arkham Asylum and Just Cause 2. If they see some potential in True Crime: Hong Kong, they're probably right.

That's a game franchise I always wanted to play but never did... ^^ hopefully i'll have a reason to play it once it's done.
