Resident Evil 4 & Code Veronica X HD Comparison Screens - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 24 March 2011 / 7,951 ViewsFor the 15th anniversary of Resident Evil, Capcom has officially announced that the highly acclaimed Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica X will be released as downloadable titles for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As was reported yesterday, both titles have been enhanced with upgraded visuals as they make their debut on high-definition consoles. Trophy support has also been added.
Resident Evil 4 currently stands as one of the best-reviewed games of all time with a 96 ranking on MetaCritic.
Here are some comparison screens of Resident Evil 4 from a press release. The original version is on the left, HD on the right.

The difference is amazing to me. There are a few more in the gallery below.
Also as part of the 15th anniversary, Resident Evil fans will get a chance at exclusive apparel and merchandise in addition to the 3DS games Resident Evil: The Mercenaries, and Resident Evil: Revelations. More information will be forth coming as the anniversary kicks into high gear.
While I personally dislike zombie games (not a huge fan of things jumping out at me) I think it's great that some of the best older games are getting updated visuals so you can experience it all over again but not have to go through the discomfort of looking at harsh, older visuals. (The difference is particularly harsh when you go directly from the latest HD games to an old gen console)
What do you think about re-releasing popular games with updated graphics? Is it just a ploy to get your cash or actually a good idea too?

Harsh graphics? Resident Evil 4 on Wii still looks amazing to me.
Nah, those images were obviously doctored for 'dramatic effect'.
Neither the PS2, GCN or Wii versions looked like that blurry mess on the left side of the comparison shots.
I mean c'mon. If RE4 really did look that bad the gazillion of gamers that bought the game since 2005 would've noticed and made it a big issue. As big of an issue as PC gamers who complained how the port of RE4 initially looked horrible compared to even the PS2 version. Also consider that reviewers and critics praised RE4 visuals and even gave it some awards. Beating out God of War's visuals. Think about that one long enough.
Capcom screwed around with the non-HD images, using wonky 480i captures with bad contrast and lighting. Thus making the HD versions look superior for promotional reasons. It's a PR stunt. Ton convince current HD crazed gamers that they need to buy these 'remakes'. That's all.
For those saying the Wii version looks like the screens on the right, as someone who's owned and beaten the Wii version at least 6 or 7 times, and the Gamecube one before it (which looks identical) I can tell you it doesn't look like that. I agree the left side images are blurrier than in-game, but if you'd like to check out some of the screenshots we have in our game database, those are what the Wii version looks like. It doesn't look like those above screens because, in addition to clearly raised resolution, those screens obviously have anti-aliasing on them, which the Wii version DEFINITELY doesn't have.
PS2 version was junk... it's nice to see this get a HD treatment.... it's really a beautiful game and the higher res will only make it look that much better
Yeah Resident Evil 4 on Xbox 360 im so glad i played the PS2 version just a few months ago.
Oh I am definitely getting these!!! I played (hired) but never finished Code Veronica X, never got a chance to play RE4.
This is a pic I found of the PS2 version for instance... http://www.weblogsinc.com/common/images/3734175641785942.jpg?0.40605316534268465 You can see the difference in clarity and softness from the HD version at least.
@kingofbubba- Though the left side doesn't look that terrible in the Wii game at least, the right side still looks like it has more detail and clarity than the Wii version to me at least. We didn't actually cut the comparison, they came to us as is, we just directly uploaded them.
Also since PS move support wasn't mentioned in the press release, it doesn't LOOK like it's in the works for now but again, who knows.
@kingofbubba- I agree, if you Google the images for screen shots of the old games, it does indeed not look as bad as what they showed. Capcom could have taken a blur filter to increase the difference and released it to the press, who knows. We'll be sure to try to keep an eye on anymore incoming images, particularly for Code Veronica.
kingofbubba... i thought the same thing too when i was looking at those images. I know the PS2 version had a bit muddier textures than the others, but i don't remember the GC/Wii version looking that blurry!
I'm more anxious to see the Code Veronica X update... it'll probably look light night and date compared to the Dreamcast original and PS2/GC port.
Now I'm not doubting that those might come from a press release, but...I just recently played the ada wong side missions and then replayed part of the original mission since I wanted to play around with the chicago typewriter, and the right side of those images (the "better" side) looks exactly like the Wii version. They just made the left side look horrible! Haha, I guess it's just a little bit of laziness--or releasing images before they're available? The good news is that the actual HD version should look even better!
Does anyone know if they are planning on including PS move support? Any indications yet? I think the pointer functionality is part of what makes the Wii version so good. I just hope more people get to enjoy this game!
Big fan of resident evil 4 I bought it on a whim many years ago after having given up on the Resident Evil series, and was pleasantly suprised to find it to be one of the best games I played :) I hope they update more than simple visuals dunno if I could stick the stop and shoot nowadays :/ or if they do leave it like that, when you go to change weapon...don't keep the game running (fucking resi5...)
Very VERY excited for this. Always have had a small obsession with RE games, from the original directors cut on PSX, to RE2, then RE3 Nemesis, then I played RE Code Veronica X on PS2, then I even stooped so low as to play, and enjoy, Resident Evil Dead Aim. Then bought a gamecube just for RE1 Remake, and RE0, loved them both. Then got RE4 day 1. Loved it, had the PS2 version, the Wii Version and Gamecube version. I have a few of the other RE games on Wii, but my point here is.... With trophy support now, I will DEFINITELY be getting another copy of both of these games... Absolutely ecstatic about this release. Can't wait!
I'm more than happy to get it if the controls are updated to modern day 3rd person shooter controls, like RE5 or Dead Space. RE4 controls are outdated. and RE4 was one of the greatest games of all time. RE5 is a POS compared to it. so i'll get it, most definitly, but the series has almot died for me unfortuantely.
I think this compliation will be Wii version, but with the adittion of HD.
MidegetQ@ you are totally right...
No PS3 image there.
Just a headsup: The images were obtained from a press release, so whatever you see is what Capcom says it looks like.
@wfz
ditto. looks like the right pic is what it looks like on ps2/360, and the left is what it would look like on ps1/xbox
So here I am, browsing VGC on my lunch break, and for the first time ever I felt so compelled, I had to sign on to say this.
The left-hand side of those images look like pure garbage. They look nothing like the actual original games. That's the biggest BS comparison I've seen in a long time. Don't get me wrong, it's cool that the games are getting HD releases, but the pictures are entirely misleading. When I play this game on my Wii it looks very close to the right hand side of those images. So meh.
ive played resident evil 4 around 100 times so i can play it again :D
It seems like a nice improvement but the original game never, and still doesn't, look that bad.
Can't wait to play Code Veronica again. That was the last Resident Evil game I played. Maybe I will try part 4 to see what all the fuss is about.
Resi, Code Veronica, holds a special place in my heart. One of those games I remember with many great memories of the game, and the time in my life.
Will be superb to play it again, in the upgraded HD spec.
It looks like someone took the original game and applied a blur filter to half of it.
