Torchlight II to "Probably" Have 4-8 Player Co-op, PvP - News

Runic Games mentioned a while back that they're working on a sequel to the 2009 game Torchlight. In an interview with VG247 they decided to share some details about what improvements will be made in the sequel.

Online co-op was confirmed initially, and it will still be in the game, but Runic haven't decided on how many players to cap the limit at yet.

“We haven’t set the party maximum just yet,” said Max Schaefer, the company's CEO.

“The sweet spot, just from playing in the office, is 1-4 players… It’s an ongoing debate right now where we set the maximum number of players in the game. It’ll probably be between four and eight.”

The largest complaint about the original game was the omission of online co-op, even though it was a well-recieved game overall, which is why they're making it the main improvement for the new game. Multiplayer options won't be solely limited to co-op, however. “We’ll probably enable a PvP mode that’s just basically for people to have fun with,” he said.

“We’re not going to spend any time trying to really balance it very well, or make particular games for it. We want PvP to basically be something where, if you just want to see who’s stronger between you and your friend, you can do that.”

He also said that the sequel will be much larger than the first game. “We’ve got considerably more content than we did in Torchlight. We’ve got multiple hub cities, vast overland areas and lots of lots of dungeons.”

As for a release date, he said they're aiming for May 2011.

Not too interested in the first, but very interested in the second one due to co op.
