Blizzard Deleting StarCraft II Maps "Because They Can" - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 05 August 2010 / 4,405 Views

For those of you wondering, yes, Blizzard is keeping a close eye on what the community is creating for their blockbuster StarCraft II. In the game, players are given the tools to create map packs of their own and upload them for sharing with other players.

Of course, if they contain anything that is deemed offensive, Blizzard can take the content down and will notify the user.

"While players are encouraged to share the maps they create through Battle.net, published maps are subject to review to ensure that they promote a fun and safe environment for all players," Blizzard community manager "Lylirra" said on the StarCraft II forums. "If a map is found to contain inappropriate content, it will be removed from Battle.net and the map maker will be contacted via email."

Interesting enough, StarCraft was rarely monitored for player modding and map making, but now the sequel will be. The answer?

"Because we can. Literally. We have a support department now of size and ability to enforce these types of things. It simply wasn't possible when our in-game support used to consist of approximately 20 technical support agents."

Have you guys tried your hand at map making for StarCraft II? Will Blizzard's monitoring have an effect on what you create?

It makes sense. A few years ago on WC3: TFT you'd always see someone hosting a porn slideshow/map on the custom games list. And misleading title is fail.

Flame bait headline? I have come to expect better from vgchartz. But I see this as something blizzard has to do, imagine if some kid downloaded an offensive map, I am sure a lawyer in America would find a way to find blizzard liable. I associate this with the reason we also have to have wet floor signs on dry tile at my restaurant to avoid lawsuits just in case someone falls.

Title is misleading.

This is not a big deal. It's not as though Blizzard will be arbitrarily deleting custom maps "because they can" which is what the headline suggests. Anything up for removal that warrants a response from one of Blizzard's content moderators would have to be legitimately offensive.

If you already have an army of staff policing WoW to try to keep a veneer of civility, it makes sense to deploy that army with your other products as well.

Hmmm...might be a slippery slope, but if anybody has seen the message boards of Blizzard, you would know how many creeps are on those boards.

Could it have something to do with it not being M rated and people hosting games with porn pics for the mini map pic after you load the game or a porn slide show...

I don't mean to defend Blizzard or anything, they've really messed things up this time... But the title here is pretty misleading. It sounds like they do it whenever they want to, because they have the power. However, to me, it seemed more like they want to moderate their game and they are able to do it, unlike before.

That said, they should just let modding happen like always before: no moderating. Well, moderating is OK if it's your service but then you should also offer the choice for no service with no moderating, ie. how mods usually work. No central server for mods, just spread all over the web.
