The Japan Preview: 8/1 Edition (Sengoku Basara 3, Project Diva 2) - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 01 August 2010 / 5,318 ViewsSummary & A Look Ahead:
July 2010 finished as it began - with several strong releases. Sega's Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2 for PSP, and Capcom's Sengoku Basara 3 for PS3 and Wii both performed well. Alot of DS software and some Wii software also held up quite well for the week. Overall, over 400,000 copies were sold of Project Diva and Sengoku Basara 3 - with each title topping 100,000 units. Nintendo's Wii Party may have also topped 100,000 for the week as the game has three versions. The version of Wii Party not bundled with a controller sold 90,000 for the week. July has been a good month for Japanese software, with eight new titles topping 100,000 units for the month.
Looking to the future, Pokemon Black / White has jumped up the preorder chart very quickly and now has 325,000 preorders with about seven weeks to go before release. Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3 has 315,000 preorders with a release date still to be determined. Both games will be enormous, and I wouldn't be shocked if Sony tries to convince Capcom to release MH3P during the same week as either Pokemon or the 3DS.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platform market share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit Plus do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending August 1, 2010.
Software by Platform:
Figures are listed by the age of the platform, for the top twenty sku information that we recieve early.

Wii Software - Wii Party is now holding very well, and is rapidly moving up the list of best-selling games in Japan. By the end of September or October Wii Party should be the 13th million-selling Wii game in Japan. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is holding fairly well now, but will drop well behind Super Mario Galaxy due to when seasonal lifts are set to arrive for each title. Sengoku Basara 3, as with Wii Party, has three versions available for purchase - and thus is likely to end up at 55,000 - 60,000 units for the week in th final data as only the sku that did not include a controller charted in the preliminary top twenty. Dragon Quest Monsters: Battle Road Victory looks like it is starting to hold - it may level off for a bit at 10,000-15,000 units per week before dropping quickly. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Fit Plus should all be over 5,000 units in the final data. Expect Wii hardware sales to rise slightly, into the 20,000 to 26,000 unit range for the week.
PS3 Software - Sengoku Basara 3 had a much bigger opening on PS3 than on Wii (roughly 11:3). Otherwise though, it was a quite week for PS3 software - except for Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2010 which rose a bit on the new PS3 model / color release for the week. White Knight Chronicles 2 may also be over 5,000 units in the final data. Expect PS3 hardware sales to rise into the 30,000 to 45,000 unit range on Sengoku Basara 3 and the new PS3 model / color.
X360 / PS2 Software - No games charted for either system. Ninety-Nine Nights for X360 may be over 5,000 units in the final data though. Expect X360 hardware sales to fall into the 3,500 to 5,500 unit range while PS2 hardware sales remain in the 1,000 to 2,000 unit range for the week.
PSP Software - Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2 sold 150,000 units in its first week - a big improvement over the week one of the first Project Diva. However, the growth from preorders to week one sales was quite low and that is usually an indication that a title will have poor legs. Odds are the newest Project Diva will end up selling roughly as many copies as its predecessor. Powerful Pro Baseball had another decent week for PSP in distant second place, and Monster Hunter continues to sell at a steady pace. Fate / Extra did not chart this week after a 70,000 opening - indicating that there are supply issues. A fall to perhaps 10,000 - 20,000 is likely in the final data, as opposed to say, 25,000 if there were no supply issues. Last Ranker, Trick x Logic, and Momotarou should all be over 5,000 units in the final data as well. Expect PSP hardware sales to remain in the 30,000 to 35,000 unit range for the week.
DS Software - Ten DS games across 11 skus charted this week. The latest DS card battle game sold almost 60,000 units as the top seller, outpacing Metal Max 3 by over two to one. Inazuma Eleven 3 sold another 40,000 units for the week - it is definitely stabilizing. Taiko, Harvest Moon, Quiz!, Fire Emblem and Tamodachi all had decent weeks as well, coming in at 10,000 to 25,000 units. Art Academy, Girl's Side Story, and Hitman Reborn should also be above 5,000 units in addition to the ten games which charted. Expect DS hardware sales to fall into the 42,000 to 47,000 unit range for the week.

look like SB estimate is quite high or Project Diva has performed quite a bit better than SB.
It'll be interested to see the white effect for PS3. Having looked at an unboxing it's re-confirmed what I've always thought: white electronics are not my bag baby. I'm strictly a silver or black person when it comes to TV's, DVDs, consoles, computers, laptops, stereos, clothes (ok NOT silver clothes) etc, and I mostly prefer black over silver. White is for fridges, washing machines, clothes driers, ovens and dishwashers...IMO
I wouldn't be surprised if 360 comes in above the preview estimate again. I think the current range of skus and prices will see 360 living in the 6-8K range for a while.
TheSource: A question.
I don't get how it would do any good to sony to release MH3P at the same time as 3ds/Pokemon.
As far as I know. Pokemon preorders jumped pretty radically from 0 to 300k. No to me tion the ds userbase is bigger than PSP. So as I see it, releasing both games aligned might offset both, especially MH3P. And if it releases alongside 3DS, it just won't compete with new hardware, especially 3D which is a sensation right now.
So I would believe Sony would try to avoid Pokemon - 3ds to maximize psp sales.
However you are the expert so... I just wanted to know
Wii party is very successful. So it is that new PS3 game I've never heard about. And the new models finally landed. I wonder when they will release on North America and Europe.
Big week for the PS3, I say it may hit 50K
Wii Party is bashing my expectations to a pulp. I now have no doubt that it will reach 10 million WW.
