No Brutal Legend Sequel, but Schafer DOES Have 4 Other Games - News

Brutal Legend, Tim Schafer's latest commercial bomb (Jack Black, metal, imagination... and still barely cracked a million units sold as a multiplat release?) is NOT getting a sequel.  Maybe it was the whole "it's an action game NO WAIT it's an RTS!" bait-and-switch that made gamers (and reviewers) a little... uneasy.  It's now $20 brand-new at GameStop.

"We [Double Fine Productions] got a phone call from a publisher saying, 'We're not going to do a sequel to Brutal Legend.'  My fault was that I had not prepared for that, so we did not have a project ready to go," said Tim at the recent Develop conference in Brighton.  Luckily his team had just made a handful of game prototypes over a two week period as part of a team motivational exercise.  They picked the best four, and within a few months all four had publishing deals.

"In a couple of months all four games got signed.  So we became officially a multi-project studio.  Trying to kill us made us multiply," Tim stated plainly.  He also confirmed, "Some of the games are downloadable, and some are retail."

After Brutal Legend's four-and-a-half-year development un-fun, he seems convinced that "going small" would be best for Double Fine's future.  Tim explains:

""We've seen the benefits of it right away.  The advantages of doing small budgets means there's less compromise.  Publishers are not as afraid of doing something unusual with smaller budgets, of $2 million or less.  They're less likely to grab your IP rights if you're only asking for a small amount of money."

Sounds good to me.  Some of them are even set to release by the end of the year, spanning multiple genres.  Let's see what Timmy's got for us next!  My bet though is that Activision won't be one of his publishing partners...

The whole heavy metal rock thing is a big thumbs down, it's for a niche market only, that's why it sold in low numbers, had it been in another neutral setting then it might have faired better....."might" is the operative word.
