Modern Warfare 2 sells 7 million copies on day one - News

by Brett Walton , posted on 11 November 2009 / 106,233 Views

Brett Walton
11th November 2009

Early data is in and the confirmation that Modern Warfare 2 will become the fastest-selling game of all time isn't a big surprise in itself, but the margin with which it looks to take the record is astounding.

VGChartz preliminary day one figures puts the sales to date (including the midnight launches) at over 7 million copies worldwide across Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Around 55% of sales are on Xbox 360, 33% on PS3 and the remaining 12% on PC. In terms of regional breakdowns, over 4.2 million units were sold in the Americas (3.7 million USA), 1.2 million in the UK and 350,000 each in France and Germany.

Based on the day one figures and the Tuesday release, week one figures should come in at close to ten million units which smashes the 5.92 million week one record set by Grand Theft Auto 4 last year and positions Modern Warfare 2 as the most successful game launch of all time.

In fact, even on a single format (Xbox 360), week one sales are projected to come in at around 5.5 million units - this alone is enough to be the fastest-seller of all time, even without the PS3 and PC versions as you can see below:

(Chart edited - we'd initially missed some of the big Japanese RPGs of the previous generations)

Stay tuned to VGChartz for the latest updates as we get more data in and of course remember that this is just PRELIMINARY data at this stage and will realistically have a potential +-10% error.

the game sells this well due to its superb online modes.
single player was a great experience overall lots of wow moments but the multiplayer just keeps pulling me back for hours call of duty is just that beast that wont die no matter how much you think its over hyped your opinion doesnt exist cause so many more people know that the multiplayer is not matched (fps genre) in any way

Wow the last time a game had so much hate was Halo 3, even though it was great, and i'm sure MW2 is great, but probably overhyped

I don't think that MW2 will push another 1.7m on X360 the same week after day one. I say 5m week one at most. The same goes to PS3 version. Too many people decided to buy it on day one for it to push such massive numbers in the rest of the week.

this game is a great game but what has it done thats new seriously idk why the mw2 fanboys act like this is the best game ever made omg when this game came out the forum stupidity has reached a all time high they might as well just kept the orginal call of duty modern warfare and add this as an expansion lol i dont see how this game did anything new i just hope this game dont win game of the year because that belongs to uncharted 2 honestly no i dont hate mw2 its a really good game but when people act as if this is the best thing to happen to gaming since metal gear solid then you so mistaken i dont consider people buying this game solely for the online anything ground breaking but it is impressive it sold 7million in 1 day although its not shocking and second the server issue is not even sony problem that is iw fault because if you look the servers run for cod mw2 are run by iw not sony and the servers for the xbox live is run my Microsoft this has nothing to do with paying nothing so please 360 owners do your research if you need to blame anybody the blame goes on Iw not sony i hate when ppl feel the need to blame sony for every little thing before even knowing there informatiion haha kinda funny if you look on ign with the new survey saying how the mw2 fanboys wanted to pay a subscription for new extra content lmfao i cant wait to see activision scam you guys out of your nickel and dimes see if you have the same love for them as you once did

  • 0
milkyjoe (on 13 November 2009)

It's quite funny this, it's sold so well, yet there's already a huge backlash against it on other forums, saying that it's easily the most overhyped, and overrated game of all time.

  • 0
dark_gh0st_b0y (on 13 November 2009)

well, i don't see why, it doesn't seem/sound like the best game of all time

i'll probably get MW for Wii instead, but i may buy it in the future

i understand it's awesome game, but never thought it could have chances for best selling of all time

lol at the ownage given by Statix, go you show em the truth, coz they know its right.
I have another point to add, if this truely is down to PSN alone, how come Uncharted 2 multiplayer has been working properly since it's release??
I am telling you it is down to the choices that IW and Activision has made, it is there way of providing the multiplayer experience which is letting down all us PS3 users.

sony should market free online pay compared to xbox live more hard....ppl buying 360's for their kids won't be suprised when that kid asks for a 12 month subscription on their birthday lol

@Apollian: What the hell are you talking about, "you get what you pay for?" Yes, sometimes you get what you pay for, and sometimes you DON'T get what you pay for (in the case of Xbox Live's $50 subscription fee).

I've had mostly positive experiences with PSN, with good, stable network connections, high-player counts in PS3 exclusives (60+ players), good ping... For the fact that you have to PAY $50 every year to play online on 360, I would expect an online GAMEPLAY experience and performance that at least outperforms PSN in some ways, but it DOESN'T. Despite having to pay a subscription fee, you don't appear to get any more stable connections, any better ping/performance... hell, Xbox Live is even DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE a lot more, and for longer stretches at a time than PSN is. Not to mention every 360-exclusive game seems to be limited at the MOST to ~16 players max. You regularly find PS3 exclusive games that support 32, 60, and even 256 players at a time, with very little to no lag from my experiences (I'm in the MAG beta).

What's even more laughable is that the free PSN, has been shown to outperform the $50/yr Xbox Live in terms of download speeds (how long it takes when downloading demos and patches) in various comparison tests that have been done.

So much for getting what you pay for, or the misconception that Xbox Live outperforming PSN because you have to pay for it.

Apollian: The "inexperience" argument of PSN may be valid 3-4 years ago. I would say that Sony have gained plenty of experience since the PS2 days. When was the last time you actually tried PSN? I've been playing MW2 on PSN the past couple days and have had ZERO problems

  • 0
jefforange89 (on 12 November 2009)

Wouldn't be surprised if it bombed - zero ads + 2-year old port, despite what many will say, is not a formula for success.

  • 0
gtcarro (on 12 November 2009)

I finished MW2 in just 5 hours and the SP mode of this game sucks.

The COD4:MW was bad, but MW2 story is AWFUL.

So many people will be desapointed...

Modern Warfare 2 will be:
Fastest-selling game of all time: YES
Best FPS of the year: YES

Because there is game that is AWAY better in Graphics, Soundtrack, Design and Story.
What game???
Uncharted 2 (of course)

  • 0
Apollian (on 12 November 2009)

like they say, PSN maybe free...but you get what you pay for...if you want something done correctly, you have to pay for it. and Xbox Live does that.

I stayed away from the PS3 version, fully knowing Sony's inexperience with online play. if its a single player game, I'm more than happy to buy the PS3 copy. but for online, I won't take that chance, its Xbox Live all the way.
plus DLC content it normally quicker and less problematic on the Xbox.

According to IW its because the PSN servers are farmed out to 3rd parties and they don't have enough of them. So yes it is because of PSN, if you want to believe IW.

Tried to play this game on a friends PS3 yesterday and it was impossible to join a game and on the one occasion we got on the lag was unplayable.

Brought the 360 version last night and online is solid as a rock despite there being a couple of million more playing this game on the 360 than there are on the PS3, I'm glad I pay a small fee for xbox live and peace of mind.

I agree with you on that one. Recently, there have also been some multi-plat games that have sold better on PS3 than 360. I just hope third party developers finally see there is money to make on both, so they'll put more effort on making the PS3 and 360 versions equal, instead of just throwing up their hands and saying it's too hard (I'm looking at you Valve.) I will admit, though, that recently most developers have been getting on board with this idea.

@spurgeonryan: Who cares about opening weeks? Try looking at the top-selling games of all time, it's a sea of blue - only two of the top 20 are not published by Nintendo, and nine of these 18 are from this generation.

And they've also put out three titles this year, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus, and New Super Mario Bros Wii, which will all end up in that top 20 when all's said and done, more than likely.

Just looking at how these sales go, 3rd party publishers are probably going to start leaning towards multi-platform releases. It's going to be hard for any exclusive to reach these type of numbers. M$ probably also doesn't see any need to buy exclusives anymore, seeing as to how good software sells on the 360 even if it's multi-plat.

Maybe if nintendo would put out some interesting games more than twice a year they would have some big sellers as well.People need to be interested in Nintendo to want to support it or even pay attention to other games. When really good games come out twice a year 8 months apart people dont care. So 50 million people will not buy more than 12 thous copies of dead space. The wii only has one game on this list and that is what the third installment in the brawl franchise. come on nintendo get people to want to play you again. bremuda triange or jack the ripper game.

  • 0
ckmlb (on 11 November 2009)

360 has much bigger user base than PS3 whee COD does the best: NA and the UK. And people who are complaining about high sales of should go play their games instead of complaining about the sales of a game they just happen to not like.

I don't get into the multiplayer of modern warfare so I'll buy this when it's cheaper some day.

  • 0
Barozi (on 11 November 2009)

I made some calculations based on other blockbuster titles.

This is no where near a professional estimation, but it should give you a feeling of how much MW2 could possibly sell in the near future:

CoDMW2 will have at least legs like GTA4 (2.2 FW multiplier) or Halo 3 (2.7 FW multiplier) probably even better.

Both GTAIV and Halo 3 had a 2nd week drop of about 75-80%. So 2nd week sales could be as following:
360 - 1.2m
PS3 - 750k

360 version alone could easily reach 13 million sales, PS3 version 8 million and PC version 3 million (although we have no good data for PC legs)

  • 0
ReconPJ (on 11 November 2009)

@Vaten..... HALO ODSTis on 360 and so will be L4D2... Not quite sure how you feel this is the only title avaialble. 360 sales are for the simple fact that the damn game plays better on that console and that most players prefer the online 360 to the PS3... Me included. I have both and only bought the 360 version.

  • 0
zibeddy (on 11 November 2009)

another reason why the 360 has more sales is the online service compared to the ps3 which is non existent at the moment.

  • 0
