With GTA VI on the horizon, the PS5 will pass the Wii this year. The more interesting question is for how long the PS5 will be around. Will the hardware drought force Sony to discontinue the PS5 early, or will the possible 1k price of the PS6 force them to keep the PS5 around?

..correct the PS5 will pass the wii this year. Question now is with the xseries not being much of a competitor why would sony not stick with the PS5 for a few more years, if they loose money for everyone sold just get some games that millions will purchase.

I can see Sony wondering whether the PS6 will do well early on or not. If the PS6 and the rumored 1k price starts selling badly, they might want to keep the PS5 around as a cheaper alternative until they can somehow fix the situation. On the other hand, the hardware shortage might become so bad they need to cut the PS5 as short as possible to dedicate all their orders for the PS6 (also, if they trully want to kill physical games, they will kill the PS5 as soon as they can, to force people to upgrade).

In my opinion, it is way too soon for an upgrade, since there is no that much of a demand for higher specs beyond a couple of exceptions like GTA VI. But Sony probably has obligations to their shareholders to release a new system every 6-7 years, even with the hardware crisis. That, and the PS6 will be a digital-only system, so the sooner they kill the PS5, the more money they can promise to their investers.

They can't and won't decrease PS5 price. Next year Sony will increase PS5 price again to $749.99 and discontinued the disc version
