The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 US:

Gap change in latest month: 148,762 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 819,472 - PS5

Total Lead: 1,524,929 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 21,136,789

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 19,611,860

July 2024 is the 45th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 148,762 units.

I wonder if Sony are either fine with the PS5 potentially finishing behind the PS4 globally at the end of its lifecycle.

Or if they are all-in on beating the PS4 and already thought out a masterplan to reach that.

Because frankly, I think they should know they won't reach that without a (significant) price drop.

At this point in time I really wonder if they will hold up the current price tag even until GTA6 arrives.

PS5 already made more profit than PS4. Sony probably cares more about profit than whether OS5 reaches 110 million instead of 120 million.

Nintendo should emulate that and start hyping next gen now rather than try to milk Switch and pass PS2. Go for new quit going for the current!

Main thing is nothing is going down in price. You can see that with PC parts since 2020 which haven't gone down so console prices can't either.

PS5 is doing well in american countries. Looking at "platforms total" page it looks like PS5 has already reached the middle of PS4's sales including "rest of the world" (probably it means many regions like South America, Australia, Zealand, Korea, Japan and a range of countries in Asia".
The only region a bit behind in terms of sales is Europe at the moment if comparing to PS4 at that 2017 moment.

It's estimate that PS4 has been sold 41+ mil in Americas and 45+ mil in Europe according to previous articles.
PS5 has been sold 25 mil in Americas and 20 mil in Europe.
So, you might be right about estimates. PS5 could eventually sell 40+ mil units in Americas and 35-40 mil units in Europe. But it also depends on the launch window of PS6 and the pooularity of PS5 Pro version.
But still the initial PS5's shortages were bigger in Europe than in America. Also there's an impact of PC gaming growth and Switch's pooularity in Europe. And don't forget that XS is sold almost like XO there. XS sales are not that big in Europe but the current margin doesn't seem to be so big comparing to PS4-PS5. Probably XGP subscription and SeriesS version helped to improve XS result.
