Rumor: God of War Original Trilogy Remaster is in Development - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 January 2024 / 9,778 Views

XboxEra co-founder Nick Baker is claiming he heard a remaster of the original God of War trilogy is in development. He isn't "100 percent sure" if it would be announced in 2024 or in 2025.

The first God of War released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005, God of War 2 released for the PS2 in 2007, and God of War 3 released for the PlayStation 3 in 2010. The first two games got HD releases in the God of War Collection for the PS3 in 2009, while God of War 3 got a remastered version for the PS4 in 2015.

Now THIS is a Sony remaster I could get behind! Primarily for the first 2 games since the gameplay, while fun, has a lot of outdated gameplay mechanics.

I don't agree, I played it recently and the gameplay is still very good, the graphics that are well outdated

They already are remastered. You should play them on the PS3, they are quite nice.

True, but those that were born when that remastered collection originally released would be in high school now lol. I think enough time has passed to have the originally trilogy to be modernized in every aspect.

What mechanics are outdated?

Leynos ClassicGamingWizzz (on 27 December 2023)

Mash Square. TO this day I don't get why they are so revered when they have the most brain dead combat on top of grey character on grey backgrounds with unlikable main character.

The combat is way more sophisticated than in the new games

That's sad

Well Remasters typically don't change much (if anything) when it comes to mechanics.

I’d settle for a free roaming camera instead of a fixed camera lol overall the games have aged better than most.

  • 0
Hiku G2ThaUNiT (on 26 December 2023)

That seems reasonable. Iirc MGS 3 didn't have a free camera until the Subsistence version.

It's not because the last 2 God of Disneyland games have some TOTALLY USELESS skill trees that the original games are outdated. I had and still have way more fun with the old games than the new ones and not only cuz there were more weapons. I just hope they will abandon the TOTALLY USELESS and UNFITTING rpg aspect and focus more on the hack-and-slash aspect which never get old and was what made the franchise a cult one.

There's nothing wrong with preferring the Greek era games, however you come across as very immature and narrow-minded. You also sound firmly stuck in the past which is pretty sad.

Regardless, the 'God of Disneyland' duology is universally critically acclaimed and turned the franchise into the behemoth it is today, not everyone is going to like all the changes but Santa Monica Studio's gamble clearly paid off with the vast majority of gamers.

Also just because you personally can't comprehend the skill trees doesn't make them TOTALLY USELESS & UNFITTING, that's a you problem.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to have remakes of these given the 3 games have previously had the remaster treatment.

Zkuq SecondWar (on 26 December 2023)

I don't personally even know what to expect from this at this point, since what used to be called a remake is nowadays often called a remake, and what might once day have been called a re-imagining or something, is now called a remake. This could be anything, for all I know.

Remasters already exists and are a missed opportunity.
I usually don't even care about remakes much less remasters, but oh boy, if Santa Monica delivered a remake making the campaign of 1 to 3 become a single continuous game, that would hype me to ridiculous levels.

Do it.
Would also love to get Killzone and Infamous collections

Don't forget Resistance.

With the costs of AAA development sky high, it makes sense for developers and publishers to double dip with games that have a proven track record. As long as they are truly modernizing the games, not just polishing them up a bit, then I'm a likely buyer.

TLOU isn't something I'll buy, because the games aren't old or outdated enough. But, a modern remake of a 20-year-old game like God of War is definitely reasonable, in my eyes.

Lukaaa640 VAMatt (on 01 January 2024)

Why remake a game that's already great to play??? Just go buy a PS3 and play them. It's alsoa complete waste of money rebuilding the entire game for an audience that doesn't really have that much inerest in them.

They already got remastered. Sony needs new leadership it seems

twintail KratosLives (on 27 December 2023)

What's this leakers track record with Sony stuff?

  • +1
NobleTeam360 (on 26 December 2023)

A remaster that I'd buy and is actually warranted.

  • +3
Goomba (on 27 December 2023)

Remaster(not Remake) to some games that are already remastered?!
How about remake and how about to games that aren't even remastered, like Killzone and Resistance?

  • +2
Kinneas14 (on 01 January 2024)

I'd love some new IPs instead of the same old remasters

  • 0
LivncA_Dis3 (on 29 December 2023)

This is a welcome addition but they should remake God of war!

And they should remaster forgotten franchises like killzone trilogy and resistance trilogy

  • 0
Lukaaa640 LivncA_Dis3 (on 01 January 2024)

Why remake a game that's already great to begin with?

  • 0
jamesmarkus87 (on 28 December 2023)

I honestly don't mind if it's a remake, a remaster, or even just a port. I just want to be able to play the first two God of War games on my PS5.

  • 0
Lukaaa640 jamesmarkus87 (on 01 January 2024)

But the PS3 and even PS2 are both dirt cheap to buy nowadays so why not just buy those instead?

  • 0
jamesmarkus87 Lukaaa640 (on 01 January 2024)

I already own the God of War Collection. It's the only reason why I've kept my PS3 for all these years. I simply wish that I could get rid of my PS3, and play those first two God of War games on PS5 instead.

  • 0
Lukaaa640 jamesmarkus87 (on 27 January 2024)

Uh, just keep that version then, the PS5 version might probably get censored due to "political correctness" and it'll only get a 4K enhanchment when the PS3 version already runs at 1080p.

Giggity_goo (on 26 December 2023)

ive always wanted the getaway 1-2 remastered but was way to much licenced products and alot of racism ect probably wouldn't work releasing it today

  • 0
Koragg (on 26 December 2023)

That would be great. GOW 1, 2, 3, ghost of sparta, chains of olympus, and ascension all in one. PC release would also be a cherry on top!

smroadkill15 (on 26 December 2023)

Nice! I want to see a proper upgrade! If it's a simple increase in resolution and framerate, hopefully the price reflects this.

Tober (on 26 December 2023)

GoW3 is my favorite GoW. After the credits I started it up for another run immediately.

The modern GoW (2018 & 2022) games I'm happy when they are over and I never felt an urge to replay them.

  • -3
jvmkdg (on 26 December 2023)

Hopefully they don't remove the hot scenes like they did in the last 2

  • -6

This is what I request for at least 4 years. Please, bring GoW his past glory back and bury the walt disney garbage it has become.

tslog (on 26 December 2023)

I’d buy this, but the dev’s desperately needs to get rid of all the atrocious QTE’s just for opening doors, and lots of other crap that made those games a pain to play. But overall the gameplay is still good.

I wonder if they will remove or change that horrendous last platforming section at the end of GoW 1 ?

  • -8
jvmkdg tslog (on 26 December 2023)

So you want to take all the essence out of God of War

  • 0
twintail tslog (on 28 December 2023)

I'd imagine that accessibility options would be part of the final product.
