The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

The Wii launched in Europe in December 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

The Switch, even if Switch 2 comes out this coming May, will be supported for a while yet, so it will have a much longer arc than the Wii. But you have to respect the fire that the Wii had. The only times I recall such sustained hype and optimism within Nintendo fandom was during the naivety of being a child in the NES era. The Switch has been highly optimistic too. And, of course, I’m talking the general population rather than Internet gaming communities - while there are the optimistic types on these places, they’re still magnets for dramatic cynics and pessimists — really any site that’s a platform to broadcast an opinion.
