The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Well unless you consider the Game Boy Advance a failure. It was originally designed to be released several years earlier (first leaks were in 1996 but it didn't release until 2001) but Nintendo didn't want to affect their regular Game Boy sales. On top of that I consider it a bit of a failure that it had no backlight. And then it was replaced with the DS in only 3 years.

Considering only 3 years for the generation, the Game Boy Advance was not a failure. The $100 price for the game boy advance was welcome compared to the $450 CAD for the Switch OLED. Prices have gone way up. So Switch's success is with an expensive product in comparison.

Using an Inflation Calculator, Switch OLED would have cost $208 USD on 2001, Or should I change it to CAD to make it more dramatic? haha, wait, why compare it to the OLED when you can compare it to an even more expensive one like the Splatoon/Pokemon Special Edition?
