It says it's a modern action RPG, but what I saw from the trailers was ballet style combat that I see in Souls and souls-likes. Not sure if I'm going to bite, because I just want me an action RPG where I'm not locked in a room with 1-4 enemies and having to constantly dance around them.

Really miss the days when action RPG's were their own thing, instead of today where almost everyone is trying to mix a lot of Souls into their own game DNA.

I think people need to calm down with throwing the words "souls-like" around. Action RPG was a genre long before Demon Souls was a thing. Unless the devs had already mentioned it's inspired by Souls games, by the trailer at least, it doesn't look like one to me.

Agreed, it's overused for sure and often just used for Action-RPGs or difficult games. I've seen Monster Hunter described as a Souls-like and that's a series that predates Demon Souls by several years.

Well tbf, it is an action RPG, but it definitely contains some souls DNA, because you cannot go right up to a giant monster and slice n' dice it like Dante from DMC, no, you get smacked if you don't time your attacks right and you get punished for it (like what happens in all Souls games).

You can say it predates, but that's like saying no one has ever copied others before, and we all know that's not true, MH will have taken ideas over time from other games, including Souls (especially when you consider the fact that Souls games have greatly influenced a myriad of studios over the years, that is undeniable).

I think you miss the point of my post in several ways, I didn't even specifically mention this game myself as it's hard to tell from the trailer just how similar to souls this one is in particular, I'm just more just talking about the term in general being overused. The way I see it you can't define a "souls-like" by the combat alone, since the combat system frankly isn't what's unique or defining about the Souls games. You had similar combat all the way back in OoT and again in Monster Hunter where the only main difference is there was no lock on (until recent entries). What's more unique about Souls is it's particular way of punishment like you mention (mainly the soul dropping mechanic) and it's level/encounter design (for level design it's basicly an intricate metroidvania in 3D and fairly few games go for that, even among those labeled "souls-like"). I personally think it's only the games that share these with it, that it makes any sense to call "souls-like", and frankly it isn't a huge number of games that fit that bill. Hollow Knight is probably the best known one that I would say qualifies, and that isn't even a 3D game.

If it's hard to tell from the trailer for you, are you saying it would be hard for me to tell as well?, because I saw what I saw, and I've seen the overview from the game, the same overview that the devs are using on their Steam page, it literally has Souls DNA in it's makeup.

You can still be a souls-like when you borrow 1-3 mechanics and styles from Souls, you don't have to be 100% to the note. We're still getting Doom clones to this day and they aren't going all in to be 99.9% like Doom.

yes we've had different combat styles before Souls existed, but Souls is what it is and it's clearly defined itself to the world, to a point where other studios and devs are trying to emulate it's dna into their own games, and some devs even make it obvious in their game overviews.

Well we are clearly in disagreement about what defines a souls-like, because again if there is such a thing as "Souls DNA" I would view that as the things I listed and not the combat style, as that was never unique to Souls to begin with.

It's practically been cemented as a tag for a sub genre of RPG, and the article even has the tag within it.

Action RPG btw does not auto translate to "Souls-Like", it just means it has some Souls DNA within it, that's all it means.

Also, from the game's overview:

"Play as Hilda—a brave young warrior from the Northwind Legion who embarks on a journey to the cursed city in order to save her lost father. The gameplay elements inspired by soulslike games alongside a lighter, dynamic combat system, create a fresh take on the modern action RPG genre, providing you with a harmonious difficulty and exploration balance."

It looks like one to me via it's style of flurry combat and the few enemies on screen, being locked in a room with a boss or 1-3 enemies, that's what Souls-likes and Souls do (besides mob trash, which MMO's and other RPG's do, as well as Souls at times).

So do Zelda games. I agree with what you say but the term is wearing a bit thin when in reality many of these 'soulslikes' are just action RPG with a lock on. Souls is a lot more than that, it joined a lot of different gameplay mechanics to form 1 type of package and these games shouldn't have to use the term just to get people to notice them.

I mean, it's bound to wear thin, the same did happen for games back in the day that were cited as "Doom clones".

Also there are some games that do include some factors of Souls DNA, stemming from bonfires, losing resources upon death, having to retrace steps to get back said resources, locked in a rather large room with a boss or a few enemies, all of which you have to dodge carefully.

This game already has the combat and locked in a room on their checklist so far, but that might be as far as they go.

My main gripe with copying the Souls DNA, is that not everyone likes losing resources the way you do in those games, and ppl like me dislike the whole "commit to action" style of combat, because I'm used to games like Street Fighter and DMC, where I can cancel a combat animation, instead of swinging a weapon in what looks like slow motion, while an enemy moves at lightspeed around my attack animation to then KO me (That's what it feels like to me anyway).

Looks like I missed that skimming through. That said, the combat looks Platinum inspired and you're description at the end sounds like a Zelda game.

Looks interesting, will keep and eye on this.
