I like how there's hardly any journo out there, reminding anyone that if you own the base game of OG Quake on Steam, you get this update for free....

I literally just had to look that up right now, because thanks to journalism, it made me think MS had pulled some store exclusivity shit.

The backend of Quake on Steam has been updated as well, so the enhanced version will be on Steam

Aye I just found this out myself. Really wish journos would cover this.

Surprised this is going to PS and Switch. Was this announced before the xbox and Bethesda merge or did they just decide to go cross platform with this?

This is what Phil Spencer meant by “legacy” during the Bethesda and Xbox round table when the deal finalized. Most PS fans thought Elder Scrolls and Fallout will still be on PlayStation because those series have been on PS previously, and if there’s a New Vegas remaster it just might, but Phil meant remasters like this or even remakes would be on different platforms, but not new games.

I think this is still something that isn't clear and there have been no examples yet that confirm what you're saying. The closest we have is not Bethesda related, i.e Minecraft which continues to have new releases like MC Dungeons on all platforms, vs Xbox Exclusive.

I still think "legacy on different platforms" is referring to IPs, not just old games/legacy games. We'll have to wait and see for a new fallout/doom/elderscrolls to be confirmed as Xbox console exclusive which will probs be a few years from now.

Here’s the problem with your analysis though. This is an example to confirm what I’m saying. Quake 2 and 3 were put on Game Pass yesterday, but they didn’t get any remaster or remake treatment like Quake 1 did. They were straight ports, therefore they weren’t put on any other platforms, but Quake 1 did.

Another problem. You’re saying any IP that was previously on another platform is considered legacy. If that was the case Phil Spencer would be lying through his teeth when he said “this is about bringing exclusive games on platforms where Game Pass exists.” The amount of IP that would NOT be a part of that statement would be staggering! Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Dishonored, Prey, Deathloop, The Evil Within, Quake, and Ghostwire: Tokyo.

That would have to mean the only “exclusives” Microsoft paid $7.5 billion for is Starfield and Redfall. Bethesda would have to make nothing but new IP in order to fulfill that promise. Highly unlikely that’s what happens.

And it’s really old with the comparison to Minecraft. That’s one IP and will always be one IP. It doesn’t matter if they create Dungeons or anything else. It’s still tied directly to Minecraft. And Xbox has already said they’ll continue to support games that are already on other platforms.

I didn't know that Quake 2, 3 were released on Xbox yesterday but that adds to the notion that there is no strict rule here. Those are "Legacy Games" but did not get wider releases/ports on other platforms. Instead Bethesda only released the symbolic remaster that will obviously sell the most on other platforms. Maybe the rest will be timed exclusive, who knows..

We need to take into account that Bethesda had their own conditions when being purchased, so its not all about MS' money but also the promises they gave to enable the acquisition in the first place

"in spite of the acquisition, it’s going to be business as usual for Bethesda as far as their development philosophies are concerned- to the extent that Bethesda’s games will continue to be published under the Bethesda label, not the Microsoft label."

Going back to the idea of "Legacy", this was a loose reference to the kind of stuff that might be multiplatform not a statement that anything legacy will be multiplat. So dishonored was on other platforms but it doesn't really have a major legacy, its never been a huge franchise. It doesn't mean any game that has ever been on another platform is going to be multiplatform in my interpretation, but that there will be far more consideration for those titles just as there was for Minecraft. I'm sure Minecraft dungeouns would not be on playstation if it was purely MS looking after their own pocket, versus them liaising with Mojang over how they see the brand evolving.

Minecraft to this day remains to be the only major multiplatform IP MS has claimed ownership of prior to the Bethesda deal, so it remains the benchmark. Until they announce a new Fallout/Elderscrolls etc there is no other example, so why ignore it? MS paid 2.5bn and has not made anything exclusive there. The Bethesda purchase was more expensive at 7bn but with far more frequent releases to benefit gamepass, literally a dozen studios, proprietary technology and engines, and of course the promise of many exclusives.

“this is about bringing exclusive games on platforms where Game Pass exists.” does not mean every new game must be exclusive. I just think people are getting way ahead of themselves in thinking that Elderscrolls/Fallout etc are gauranteed to be Xbox exclusive. The simple reality is no one has said that and there is no precedent set yet.

I really hope they release fallout and elder scrolls on ps5 too as I left my PC back home. With that said, you think those teams will retire after starfield and redfall? Those 7.5 billion are not for a couple years contract. Those are Microsofts for many years to come.
Also do you realize microsoft still gets money even if those games come to ps5?
It was a good investment and they will make the money back quickly
Actually they make way more profit by releasing on all platforms.

They have also continued to put Minecraft on other platforms since buying that. It's not too surprising really.

This release sounds great as I was a huge fan of quake back then, but now, 20 years later, even in 4k the game might just be outdated. I have fond memories playing this on nintendo 64 and my very first PC.
This could be great on switch for portability.
With that said I'm happy they improve old games, its better to have them and not needing them rather than not having them. Strange that this is releasing on ps and nintendo, I thought it would be microsoft exclusive because the publisher is Bethesda.

"The gyro controls can be used in conjunction with the control stick"
...but can they be used without? Because in 95% of Switch shooters, that isn't the case.

This Quake is better than Doom, Goldeneye and any Call Of Duty or Halo. I will try to get the Limited Run Edition.
