This weekly mini-series compares the aligned launch sales of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. 

It should be noted the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S had a worldwide launch, while the PlayStation 5 launch was split over the course of two weeks. Also, the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched during the holidays in November 2020.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Global:

  1. PS5: 9,000,103
  2. Switch: 6,122,860
  3. XSX|S: 5,330,164

Through the first 30 weeks available worldwide the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Switch and Xbox Series X|S by a fair margin. The PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 2.88 million units and is 3.67 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.79 million units.

The PS5 has sold 9.00 million in 30 weeks worldwide, while the Switch sold 6.12 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 5.33 million units. 

Looking at the marketshare through 30 weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 44.0 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 29.9 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 26.1 percent.

The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 40.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch US:

  1. PS5: 3,506,490
  2. XSX|S: 2,662,630
  3. Switch: 2,245,867

Through the first 30 weeks available in the US the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.84 million units and is 1.26 million units ahead of the Switch. The Xbox Series X|S is ahead of the Switch by 0.42 million units.

The PS5 has sold 3.51 million in 30 weeks in the US, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 2.66 million units and the Switch 2.25 million units. 

Looking at the marketshare through 30 weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 41.7 percent marketshare, the Xbox Series X|S sits at 31.6 percent, and the Switch at 26.7 percent.

The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 40 and current Xbox Series X|S sales until week 36.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Europe (29 weeks):

  1. PS5: 3,153,728
  2. Switch: 1,661,213
  3. XSX|S: 1,547,621

The PlayStation 5 has been available for one week less than the Xbox Series X|S in Europe. After 29 weeks the PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 1.49 million units and is 1.61 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 113,592.

The PS5 has sold 3.15 million in 29 weeks in Europe, while the Switch sold 1.66 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 1.55 million units. 

Looking at the marketshare through 29 weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 49.0 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 26.2 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 24.8 percent.

The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 43.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Japan:

  1. Switch: 1,714,456
  2. PS5: 803,952
  3. XSX|S: 47,471

Through the first 30 weeks available in Japan the Switch is ahead of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S by a wide margin. The Switch is ahead of the PS5 by 0.91 million units and is 1.67 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.76 million units.

The Switch has sold 1.71 million units in 30 weeks in Japan, while the PS5 has sold 0.80 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S 0.05 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 30 weeks, the Switch currently leads. The Switch has a 66.8 percent marketshare, the PS5 sits at 31.3 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 1.9 percent.

Switch's first holiday is fast approaching! I assume it'll take the lead but it'll be interesting to see how long it holds it.

PS5 should stay ahead Switch within the first 52 weeks and probably until year 4. Current gap suggests that we won't see a cross anytime soon.

Weeks 42-46 the Switch sold ~4 million as it was it's first holiday period. The PS5 launched at the beginning of the holiday period so won't get a significant holiday boost until after week 52. On this graph at least the Switch will definitely pass the PS5, but weeks 53-60 should see PS5 take the lead again.

My guess is the Switch will permanently surpass the PS5 in year 3, at the latest during it's third holiday season from 2019.

The last two weeks shown on the graph (w40-41) equate to Black Friday week & the week after it for the Switch line. The PS5 & XBS will reach week 41 in mid August
