Returnal is Getting Everything From the Specs of the PS5, Says Dev - News

Returnal’s marketing director Mikael Haveri in an interview with the BBC said the development team for the game is getting everything it can out of the specs of the PlayStation 5.

"I think we’re doing a lot with the visuals and really getting everything we can from the specs. And, I think that comes across with the contrast of the really dark environment against the really bright and colourful bullet-hell neon.

"What really shines through, exclusively with the PS5, is the 3D audio is something that really lets players tap into that feedback loop. When somebody appears behind you, immediately, you can turn around and shoot them without any kind of visual clues.

"Similarly, with the DualSense controller for example, if you press the L2 trigger half-way you’ll aim down sights. But, if you press it the full way, you’ll reach an alternative fire for your weapon.

"All of this communication can be done without the screen elements. That’s quite unique and lets you get deeper into the game."

Returnal will launch for the PlayStation 5 on April 30.

I see some gameplay and the Shooting /air dashing reminded me of RECORE but with a faster speed. Looks interesting.

I take it that preorders and intent to purchase on day one, just not be very high. Companies don't provide this type of filler coverage unless they are trying to boost numbers.

Of course, this stunt hardly every works. PS5 is amazing, gaming on it is just wonderful. Returnal is not a game I will spend $70 on.

I'll believe it when Sony Santa Monica says it. Still excited to try this game though.

Hmm, not sure I buy that completely. I'd wager that once again it will be up to Naughty Dog and the other big boys to show what can really be done with this hardware.

Come on now, you'll be lucky of you got 30% of the ps5's full potential.

Idk. There's a chance they're getting most of it. They've been working with the ps5 presumably for a year or two. Plus the ssd doesn't leave the other components waiting for data. Add in the fact that x86 development has been happening for nearly 10 years on console.

They might be getting a lot out of the ps5 by now.

They say that everytime start of each gen, and games keep getting better. Sure with the engine at the moment, but every year you see a lot of advancement in engine software and more familiarity

Well the problem is that getting 90% out of a system vs 100% is a huge difference visually. But it's impossible for us to determine exactly how efficient it is. It's a marketing person so it's expected for someone in that position to pump it up a little I suppose.

But I would still er on the side of the developers getting most out of the ps5 already. We just don't know how much those last few percentage points will enhance the later games.

What about all that ssd and game changing design and benefits freeing up resourses, and all that mesh shading/ geometry tech, dlss equivalent tech and so on. You really think these devs are utilsing all the new tech on hand. I doubt they are at even 40% of what is possible. I'm talking visuals, audio, size of levels, Ai, physics etc. They are maximising what they can do with the engine they have and probably game design they have been used to. I'd like to see a breakdown of their tech and design and how next gen it is.

Well the ssd wasn't invented by Sony. I would imagine they have experimented with the tech already and had an idea of what can be done with those components.

So yeah. I think between checking out ssds on pc and working with the ps5 dev kit for at least a year, they probably have a pretty good understanding.

But we really can't say how much they're using unless someone analyzed the code. The ps5 could be screaming while a game looks horrible if the programmers don't know what they're doing. I would guess these guys do know what they're doing.
