The PlayStation 5 set a new record for the biggest launch in UK history, according to sources who spoke with VideoGamesChronicle. Sales for the PS5 far exceeded the previous record in the UK, which was set in 2013 by the PS4 with around 250,000 units sold in its first 48 hours.

This does mean the PS5 had a much bigger launch than the Xbox Series X and X, which had sold around 155,000 units on its first day in the UK

The more expensive PS5 with a disc drive like with the Xbox Series X was the more popular of the two models at launch. The PS5 with a disc drive accounted for about two-thirds of the UK launch sales.

The PS5 like with the Xbox Series X|S quickly sold out and any stock shipped to the UK will likely most likely sell out quickly as Sony and Microsoft try to meet the high demand.

The PlayStation 5 had a bigger launch than any other PlayStation in history, according to the official PlayStation Twitter account. The previous record-holder for the biggest console launch in video game history was the PlayStation 4, which means the PS5 set a new record for the biggest console launch. The PS4 sold more than 2.1 million units over the course of its staggered launch in 2013.

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S set a record for the biggest launch in Xbox history, outselling the launch of the Xbox One in 2013, the Xbox 360 in 2005, and the original Xbox in 2001.

VGChartz earlier this month released estimated sales for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 sold between an estimated 2.1 million to 2.5 million units worldwide when you combine its two launch days. The two next-generation consoles from Microsoft between an estimated 1.1 million to 1.4 million units worldwide in its first 24 hours.
