Analyst: Xbox Series X and PS5 to be Priced at $450 to $500 - News

Microsoft and Sony last month unveiled the specs for their next generation consoles, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. One of the things we don't know yet about either console are the launch prices.

Analyst Piers Harding-Rolls in a new report published by analyst firm Ampere Analysis predicts the Xbox Series X and PS5 launch price will be in the region of $450 to $500.

The report also states that will be the weakened economy right now that it will affect sales for both consoles, however, it will only be noticeable once the initial core gamers purchase the consoles at launch or near launch.

Harding-Rolls also predicts that with both consoles having support for backwards compatibility that most third-party games will be released as cross-gen for at least a while. This could lead to many consumers waiting to upgrade.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has previously stated he understands the importance of price, especially after the Xbox One launched at $100 more than the PS4, despite it being weaker.

"I would say a learning from the Xbox One generation is we will not be out of position on power or price," Spencer said at the time. "If you remember the beginning of this generation we were a hundred dollars more expensive and, yes, we were less powerful. And we started Project Scarlett with this leadership team in place with a goal of having market success.

"The price will be important. Clearly, price is one of those things that people want to know. As we're watching how the cost of the components are coming in, and things like tariffs and other things, trying to figure out what that price is going to be next year. We have a price point in mind; I think we're going to hit that. But we want to make sure everything comes in right. We'll get price out as soon as we can."

Big if true. That would be a great price for the hardware.

Especially for XSX

PS5 - $449, Xbox Series X - $499. But unlike last time, the $499 price of the Xbox would be entirely justified. Not only does it have a GPU and CPU power advantage, but even "regular" consumers will look at that 825GB SSD label on the bottom corner of the PS5 box, and compare it to the 1TB SSD label on the Xbox box, and think "oh it makes sense why it costs fifty bucks more, you're getting more storage"

About what I expect as well, 450-500 would be an acceptable price range.

I think we could all get a well paid "analyst" job if it is made of stating the obvious =]

For a significant specs boost, I don't mind spending $500 at launch.

I expect £400-450 so, this is about right. I expect to spend that too.

ps5won't be priced under 549. Maybe after the initial first few months of limited supply, by then prices may drop a little and they can afford to sell at $500.

wondering if xbox will settle on the same price point or undercut ps even if it takes a hit initially.

I feel like Sony could really use a price advantage, considering the specs.....

I'm not so sure. I think they're close enough that both could be $500 and it won't make a ton of difference. XBSX would likely gain a small amount of extra sales, but SNY won't be eating that $50. With shortages for a while, PS5 can only sell so many consoles anyway. Might as well make what they can within reason for the first year.

The spec convo here will be no more significant than Pro vs X, and X had a much bigger advantage spec-wise than XSX does. Both consoles will be very powerful, but PS5 comes with the brand recognition and great exclusives. Xbox is still in a spot where they have to prove they’re to developing good titles. Spider Man 2 alone will be a huge deal.

Eeeerrrr there isn't that much dfference from past gen so not sure why this would be the first time you would skip launch.

Not much point for XBox unless you are keen for better hardware as they already confirmed all games run on the current systems. Don’t know about PS5 exclusives yet though.

I'm sure PS5 will have great exclusives and that Sony haven't revealed a game in like 3 years so there could be several great launch games, it is just that experience tell me not to expect much during launch.
