by William D'Angelo , posted on 25 March 2020 / 4,060 ViewsAnimal Crossing: New Horizons has been a huge success for Nintendo with launch sales for the game 3.5 times higher than Animal Crossing: New Leaf in the UK and selling over 1.88 million units in Japan at retail in its first weekend. The game also helped increase sales for the Nintendo Switch itself to over 840,000 units, according to VGChartz estimates.
Video games industry analyst at Niko Partners Daniel Ahmad has revealed shipment figures for the game were over 2.5 million units in its first three days. The figure includes digital sell-through. This makes it the biggest opening ever for a Switch game in Japan and the biggest opening for any game in the Animal Crossing series.

That is phenomenal. This is gonna overtake MK8DX in the long run I think.
It might have the potential to take second place, but I can only see it taking first if MK9 releases on Switch, because at the rate MK8DX is selling now it could very well reach MK Wii numbers and that's more than the entire AC franchise up until New Horizons.
So if it's 2.5 million+ JUST in Japan for the opening weekend, what do you think the global sell-through numbers will be? 4+ mil? 5+ milllion???
Monstrous.
AC: NH is among the top 3 launches ever in Japan. People!, this is big.

The Animal Crossing series has reached new sales horizons!
First the most successful Zelda, then Mario Party and now Animal Crossing record broken. Impressive how those traditional franchises sell on Switch... Pokemon and Mario Kart records are also possible to break. Only Mario Odyssey seems to have difficulties to set new records.
It's the second-best selling 3-D Mario and the best-selling 3-D Mario on its original release. Super Mario 64 has combined sales from N64 and DS. Another good holiday season or two and SMO could beat it. 2-D Mario games would be a tough act for almost anybody to follow saleswise.
