Over 20,000 Fans Sign Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott Petition - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 09 June 2009 / 9,113 Views

At 12pm the petition was well over 19,500 signatures so by now it should have over 20,000 signatures. Here's a post explaining the reason behind this massive boycott, it is from Valve’s very own Steam community pages :

“Left 4 Dead has not yet received the support and content which Valve has repeatedly stated will be delivered. Therefore, we - the members of this Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott - promise to abstain from the purchase of Left 4 Dead 2 until our requests are addressed.”

Many also feel that this move will “Split the communities and decrease the quality of multiplayer gaming… The announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a standalone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead.”

Here are a list of the group's demands (summarised):

WE REQUEST:

-That Valve honor its commitment to release ongoing periodic content for Left 4 Dead.

-That Left 4 Dead 2 not be released as a stand-alone, full-priced sequel but as either a free update to Left 4 Dead or an expansion with full compatibility with basic Left 4 Dead owners.

-That Left 4 Dead owners be given discounts for Left 4 Dead 2, should it be released as premium content.

20,000 signatures is a massive amount. It will be interesting to see how Valve responds to this interesting development.

20,00 people... thats really going to work. Quit bitching you'll end up buying the game anyways :l

Antonis (on 26 August 2009)

This is fantastic, Wow less than 2% percent of people are trying to form a boycott. lol that is just so sad. You get a year of entertainment out of a game for your money and now you are mad because the next versionis coming out too soon. Well, okay then. The funniest part about this whole thing is that of the 1.5% who are complaining at least half of you if not more are going to buy that damn game anyway because you know it is going to be Badass. Qit bitching., it's just a waste of time anyway. I am on my way to pre-order it right now.

Jesues christ your seriously making a petition because there releasing a sequel? Wow you steam owners are real panzies, Oh No there making a sequal, why don't you go cry about it, every other(and real system) will buy it in a heart beat so go finish PMS'ing then talk abotu it

Well if they don't want the game. We wii owners would love to have the game on the wii :P

So is there a petition for the people that will be buying it? :-)

  • 0
binary solo (on 14 June 2009)

Given L4D sold over 2 million 1% (now 1.5%) of owners isn't exactly such an overwhelming number to force Valve into a rethink. Come back and tell us when the petition gets to 200K, then it will be something that Valve will need to think on.

  • 0
Staude (on 14 June 2009)

They need source engine next.0

Their current version is simply outdated. Source games look 2005/2006..

And were in 2009 !..

Ofcourse they're still good.. but you can feel it in the gameplay too in most games.

Dark Massiah of might and magic is an exception to the rool.

@machrider - You do realize L4D2 isn't any form of upgrade right? And your completely wrong on the HL2 Episodes. HL2's story was somewhat complete at the end but instead of going straight into HL3 they decided to continue the story from where they left off with the episodes.

Valve also explained HL2:Ep3's delays. They are working on massive engine upgrades which I expect will make the Source Engine more amazing then what it is. BUT only HL2:EP3 and any games AFTER L4D2 will get the engine upgrades.

  • 0
machrider (on 13 June 2009)

They're wrong. Valve does not release games on time or commit to an actual logical or verifiable date. They follow what has been known as "Valve time."

Valve isn't making this sequel right away. By the time it comes out, more than enough time between the two games would have passed for this not to be a problem (which really, it isn't).

You don't see me bitching about the fact that they split Half Life 2 into episodes.

But guess what? We still haven't got Episode 3 despite the fact that they announced these episodes right after Half Life 2 came out and right after one another.

I would love a discount on Episode 3 myself. But you know what? That's stupid, not going to happen, and the same can be said about this entire petition.

Why boycott all you will end up doing is make it where they don't upgrade the first one.Due to the fact they dont have the money because people dont want to buy there sequels.

While I'm interested in Left4Dead 2 and would probably wait for a price drop anyway, I do understand where the complaints are coming from (not counting the stupid ones about the daytime setting and such).

I'd like to see how this pans out.

PeteyPeeps (on 10 June 2009)

Valve can GTFO in all honesty ... Their the new EA, do anything for money, even if its the same game every year

  • 0
Jacrid (on 10 June 2009)

I think they're right.
Left 4 Dead is an awesome game but there are many things missing, that could easily be upgradet. But instead, they sell it for the price of a full game. I mean, the game already has too few levels and possibilities. So in the end, you pay 4x more then the game's worth... I bought L4D for 18$, it really was the limit for me to spend. I'm not gonna buy L4D2 for 50$ - either I wait till it's cheaper / for free or I won't buy it. It would be a great pity, but it's not like my life depends on it.

NightDragon83 (on 10 June 2009)

Well I have no plans of boycotting L4D2 (R2D2's cousin?!?)... I'll just do the same thing I did with the first L4D... wait for a price drop or Amazon's DotD to kick in!

Paying full price for 360/PS3 games is for suckers!!!

  • 0
ameratsu (on 10 June 2009)

It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out. If anything I see this as good, as Valve will step up in one way or another, meaning that the PC owners of Left 4 Dead will undoubtedly benefit from this in the end.

I must be one of the few who will play No Mercy for another year no problem. Really, I will gladly pay $50 for this, though I do see where the signatories for this are coming from. Like I've said before, the fallout from Valve's announcement of L4D2 highlight the rift between the expectations of PC gamers and console gamers. PC gamers simply expect more, especially from a company like Valve.

  • 0
Sqrl (on 10 June 2009)

The number may be small relative to those who bought the game but Valve is fairly conscious of its public image. I won't be too surprised if they come up with an explanation for why they are doing it this way and/or offer a discount to existing L4D owners (I think they probably planned to do something like this either way honestly).

I don't support this boycott but I will say it is more reasonable than I had originally thought. Ultimately I don't think the boycott will be a bad thing no matter what. The reason is that I seriously doubt Valve is going to compromise the integrity of the game just to accommodate them but it will cause them to think it over and possibly find a way to do it that pleases everyone.

Either way I'll be playing L4D2 regardless of whether it is a standalone game for $50, an expansion for $20-$30 or free DLC.

  • 0
WarmachineX (on 09 June 2009)

what a bunch of whiners...

20,000 is a joke compared to how many bought the game.

  • 0
TheTruthHurts! (on 09 June 2009)

Ahhh shit....2.2 mil sold (subtract) 20k.....I think Valve can handle it. I guarantee half of the final tally of boycotts still buy the game in November when it releases, but doesnt have the testicular fortitude to admit it!

I bet at Valve they have a dry erase board with a drawing of a complete douche standing next to the current tally of the boycotts with a caption reading "waaahhhh, were is my free content?". Every morning they probably stand around it cracking jokes, drinking coffe, and adding the current tally to the number posted...."Hey John, boycott's up to 20k, bet ya $5 bucks it doesnt pass 40k, and if it does......who cares.....ha ha, lunch is on Microsoft".

Valves employees dont get paid to release free content, they get paid to sell and develop games!

They can have my $60 bucks because L4D2 will be worth it, just like the 1st was (IMO). Bring it on as soon as possible.......oh and where is my Episode 3??

So, if companies like MS are against free DLC, it makes it automatically ok to pay for everything?

PC owners are used to different approach from gaming companies, especially regarding value factor of the game (free patches, DLC, editing and modding ability). Valve is one of the top companies regarding that. So, when you get spoiled by Valve giving you absolutely wonderful support for most of their games, it's hard to accept the quick sequel approach they're making with L4D2.

I bought L4D as a certain "work in progress". IMHO, 4 scenarios are too little, no matter what the console players say. I expected the similar support we're getting for TF2. The support Valve promised when they were showing L4D. At least 1 or 2 new chapters and some other improvements.

But, even if we're not going to get that, Valve could've made L4D2 a non-free DLC, they even could priced it near the cost of the full game, but that would atleast keep L4D community whole, and not splitted into two parts.

  • 0
ufogang (on 09 June 2009)

  • 0
DeotoxSlayer (on 09 June 2009)

@Darth

I'm boycotting it, though not for the same reasons the people above, i'm boycotting it because i have a policy against buying yearly sequels (its the reason I don't buy Sports Games) and it has only been a year since the original L4D came out so it goes against my policy.

  • 0

Can't say I really care. They didn't say they wouldn't support L4D. They are just releasing another one. And guess what? Where does it say Valve is putting a Glock to your head? Get over it. No one cares if folks whine. Just don't buy it, plain and simple.

Speak with your wallet, not the Internet. I can almost bet those same 20K+ folks who signed it if L4D2 is even more addictive than the first one.

Talk is cheap.

  • 0

  • 0
ssj12 (on 09 June 2009)

welsh - the issue is that there are massive gaps between the releases of all the titles you listed. Older titles get bug fixes only and no new content while the new gets new content every once in a while.

We have no idea how L4D will be handled because its been less then a year before release so it feels like they are ripping off the community at large because L4D isn't receiving the 2 - 3 year gap between games like previous titles have had. If all L4D gets after L4D2 gets release is bug fixes that would be a giant middle finger at everyone who bought L4D.

  • 0
welshbloke (on 09 June 2009)

So Valve have actually said they are no longer supporting L4D? Or more likely they have not.

I can see the argument for the PC community but then they already manage to continue to support DOD and DOD Source, CS and CS Source, TFC and Team Fortress without to many issues so storm in a teacup for the PC base I would suggest.

A little more annoying for those who purchased the Console version of L4D who rightly expected more from Valve but as I said they may still continue to get their wish.

@seece: You still don't get it. This is something that Valve can't pull often, it disrupts the way the community works with a game.

"That Left 4 Dead owners be given discounts for Left 4 Dead 2, should it be released as premium content."

That's funny. If that were to happen then I demand EA to give me a discount on all their sports games, so since I bought Madden 2008 I demand that I get a discount for Madden 2009!

  • 0
akuseru (on 09 June 2009)

IMO, after less than 1 year, there should not be a new game comming out at all. To me, that just shows that they did not really release a complete game last year, which I have heard was full of bugs. Seriously.. If my favourite franchises were handled like this, I would not be happy, but rather question their reasons behind the first (or second) installment...

that would be hilarious!

You mean Seece don't ya haxxiy.
Seriously. His whinging is almost worse than the the petitioners.

  • 0
V-r0cK (on 09 June 2009)

@ seece yea i think its best to keep it Xbox360 exclusive. L4D is one of those games that help defines a system.

I think Valve should follow Darth's advice, and maybe PC owners will chance their mind and beg for it back lol

  • 0
Seece (on 09 June 2009)

"That Valve honor its commitment to release ongoing periodic content for Left 4 Dead."

that is their only resonable request. If Valve sticks to giving them what they promised (and that is not L4D2) then everything should be peachy.

  • 0
Seece (on 09 June 2009)

@ Darth lol it would be entertaining to see the reaction but I really don't think anymore than 5% of PC gamers that bought this game actually care, its just a vocal view stomping their boots, the rest shouldn't suffer for their boycott.

  • 0
haxxiy (on 09 June 2009)

Their requests are undoubtedly reasonable, no matter how much a certain forum member (whose name I won't quote) bitches around.

  • 0
darthdevidem01 (on 09 June 2009)

it would be funny if Valve said

@nen-seur

thanks

I'm reading the link, we really don't know what valve are cooking up for the original, new characters, new weapons and a new campaign could already be in the works. Thats what they were promised and thats what (they might) get.

They were not promised a brand new game with AI 2.0 and a host of other changes that are coming with L4D2

  • 0

@ seece, i see..well in that case Valve should just bring it to Xbox360 and PS3 =P

  • 0
NJ5 (on 09 June 2009)

As always, when this subject pops up people don't even bother realizing this is mostly about the PC game and community, which is quite different from the console community.

With consoles, sequels don't bother people much... it's just some money you have to spend. On PC games, the modding and mapping community is big and has a lot of weight.

This community is supported by Valve, to the point that Valve has added amateur maps to the official Team Fortress 2 version).

But again, it's obvious that many people will reply without even reading the context of this protest.

  • 0
Seece (on 09 June 2009)

This is stupid. I would much rather have a full fledged full price sequel to enjoy than have downloadable content hogging up my hard drive and slowing coming out over the course of a year. Likely anyone that has been playing Left 4 Dead has long since gotten their money worth. People need to stop being bitches and just be glad we get a sequel at all.

  • 0
NJ5 (on 09 June 2009)

@thekitchensink: I don't think it's easy to fake in this case. It's a Steam group, so you need a Steam ID and Valve can easily check if those IDs correspond to people who have paid for the game.

@Bobbuffalo: Essentially Valve is breaking their philosophy and promises about sequels and updates. They've been touting 'software as a service', saying the free Team Fortress 2 updates work out very well for them.

Other than that, the PC community which plays L4D is afraid that this will split the community between two games (not just the gaming part, the modding, mapmaking etc).

  • 0
thekitchensink (on 09 June 2009)

People are getting upset because Valve promised tons of support for L4D for a long time, and yet they're releasing the sequel less than a year after the original launched.
