Welcome to VGChartz’s Top 5 Kickstarter Games: October 2015 Edition. Before we begin, take a few minutes to look at some of the great Kickstarter games below that didn’t quite make the list.

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan: "Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is an African-Fantasy Action-RPG based on a frenetic and creative combat system." (Windows)

Haque: "/hak/ An old-school fantasy Roguelike RPG about a divine pact, a wager, and an ancient computer." (Windows, Mac, and Linux)

Memoranda: "A point & click adventure game with a touch of magical realism!" (Windows, Mac and Linux)

For The King

Developer: IronOak Games

Total Amount/Goal: $113,500/$40,000 CAD

Days Left: 5

Lowest Amount for Game: $15 CAD (About $11 USD)

Release Date: Summer 2016

Next Stretch Goal: Air Balloons and Highland Locations Added ($125K)

Platforms: Windows and Mac

The kingdom of Fahrul has found itself in a dire spot - the king has been assassinated and chaos has consumed the once peaceful land. To change their inevitably doomed fate, the citizens of the land must rise up and repel the evils that threaten their kingdom. The safety and success of these make-shift ensembles rests in your hands. For The King is a turn-based RPG being developed by Canadian game studio IronOak Games. As the invisible commander of these wannabe heroes, your decisions both in combat and while traveling will greatly determine their successes, as well as their costly failures.

The gameplay uses classic turn-based combat, where you must decide how/who to attack and when to use your special attacks effectively. The game’s world on the other hand takes cues from roguelike games. Since the world is being procedurally generated, no one playthrough will be the same as another. FTK also includes a crafting system which allows you to create rare and more powerful weapons for your growing heroes. But beware, weapons can break if put in the hands of someone who lacks the necessary skills required. Finally, For the King is both a single player and multiplayer game. While you can control the actions of your whole party alone, you can also go online and have a friend control some party members.

 The Journey Down: Episode Three

Developer: SkyGoblin

Total Amount/Goal: $30,800/$35,748

Days Left: 20

Lowest Amount for Game: Around $11 USD

Release Date: Fall 2016

Next Stretch Goal: German Localization ($37.5K)

Platforms: Windows, Mac, and Linux

The adventures of Bwana and Kito will soon be coming to a close, but they need some help first. Swedish developer SkyGoblin has come to Kickstarter in order to fund the third and final episode of The Journey Down trilogy. The Journey Down is a click & point adventure franchise featuring puzzles and mechanics that are inspired by the classic LucusArts games of the 90s (especially Grim Fandango), while the character designs are inspired by sub-Saharan culture.

Unlike the previous two games in the series, The Journey Down: Episode Three will not revolve around a central hub like St Armando. Instead, this episode will have players travelling through different locations and will involve little in the way of backtracking. Like the previous two games, the third episode will also have a jazz and reggae-inspired soundtrack, which will be produced by Jamie Salisbury. Finally, for those looking to get into the franchise, there is a $24 tier for the whole trilogy. If this Kickstarter campaign succeeds, you will immediately be sent the Steam keys for the first two episodes.

Indivisible

Developer: Lab Zero Games

Total Amount/Goal: $198,000/$1,500,000

Days Left: 36

Lowest Amount for Game: $30

Release Date: Early 2018

Next Stretch Goal: N/A

Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, PS4, and Xbox One

After creating the popular fighting game Skullgirls, Lab Zero Games is ready to move onto its next project, Indivisible. Indivisible is an RPG with combat inspired by Valkyrie Profile, although it offers its own twist with game exploration that is reminiscent of Super Metroid. The game follows Ajna, a simple tomboy-ish girl in the country who has been taught martial arts by her farther. After her town is attacked by the local warlords, she discover she has the power to summon beings called Incarnations. Indivisible will follow Ajna as she confronts the warlords and learns more about this mystical power she possesses.

Both the world and the monsters that inhabit Indivisible have been inspired by various Asian mythologies. While the game takes inspiration from Valkyrie Profile, the gameplay is almost like a fighter. Instead of using turn-based combat, it allows anyone to attack at any time (if they have the energy to do so). Combining your party members' attacks together to perform large combos is the key to success.

This is the first Indiegogo campaign to make one of these lists since I started doing them, so I’ll quickly clear up some potential confusion you might have with the site. The first thing to note is that when you back a project on Indiegogo your credit card/PayPal account will be charged right there and then. However, Indivisible is a fixed funding campaign, so if it doesn't hit its funding goal then the campaign fails and you will be refunded within five days of the project’s failure.

Allison Road

Developer: Lilith

Total Amount/Goal: £139,000/£250,000

Days Left: 10

Lowest Amount for Game: £15 (About $24 USD)

Release Date: Late 2016/Early 2017

Next Stretch Goal: Quicker Release of the Mac & Linux Versions (£300K)

Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, PS4, and Xbox One

Silent Hill fans are no strangers to despair and confusion, what with the sudden cancellation of Hideo Kojima’s P.T. But for every dark cloud there is a silver lining, and Allison Road may be that for Silent Hill fans who have been burned by Konami once too often. Allison Road is set in Manchester on a normal British fall night (so grey clouds and a little bit of rain). However, you wake up with no memory of prior events, so you must search your house for your family and deal with the true horrors that go bump in the night.

As with most horror classics, in Allison Road you are unarmed and your primary main means of survival consist of hiding and learning to navigate your way around the unfamiliar house. The knowledge you learn about your surroundings during the safety of the day will be necessary for avoiding the dangers of the night. One of the biggest draws for this game is the fact that it will be supporting the Oculus Rift and other VR technologies, although PlayStation VR support is not yet confirmed.

Home Free

Developer: Kevin Cancienne

Total Amount/Goal: $62,600/$50,000

Days Left: 19

Lowest Amount for Game: $15

Release Date: Winter 2016

Next Stretch Goal: New City Area: Dockside ($65K)

Platforms: Windows and Mac

Kickstarter has already given us a cat simulator, will soon be responsible for enabling the production of a bear simulator (assuming it releases), and could now allow for a dog simulator. Unlike those simulation titles (or the more well-known Goat Simulator), Home Free will not be a wacky game about animals doing things they can’t actually do. Instead it will be about surviving in the city as an abandoned dog, trying to make your own place in a procedurally generated world. Surviving isn’t easy, however, and learning about where to get food from and how to deal with aggressive dogs is a core part of the experience.

While some humans may be willing to share their food with you, others will try and harm you. Dogs will also have varying responses to your presence, so having an escape route at any given time will be useful. Home Free will also feature a dog park, which includes a local 4-player dog wrestling game. The dog park will also feature various modes and the different dog breeds from the main game will be available to play as. So if you ever wanted play as a dog, I can’t conceive of a better game to back on Kickstarter than Home Free.

I'd considered Allison Road. I was really hoping that they were going to do a physical release for PS4, though. I'm still watching it, just incase.

The only game I already knew of was Aurion: Legacy of The Kori-Odan, and I'm happy the kickstarter succeeded, because at a point, it didn't look like it would. It's literally the only African action RPG out there, and it may not be AAA, but its pretty high budget for such a small studio. I've been following it for a while and even talked about it on my podcast. lnk.ng/lb (episode 9)

I wish you could have mentioned my adventure game currently on Kickstarter ;) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/983902887/demetrios

Yeah, I know, it's a small funding goal - but you did mention Tiny & Tall from a French fellow dev, last time! :)

Nothing is original. All ideas, inventions, and other creative things already exist in another plane of existence. We humans just simply draw on these through the law of attraction. This is the deeper mystery philosophy of Plato.

Keiichiro Toyama created Silent Hills. The only game in the series that Kojima was to work on was cancelled. Is there a fact I'm unaware of?
