7th Gen vs 8th Gen - Aligned Sales Comparison - August 2015 Update - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 19 September 2015 / 18,294 Views

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the 7th generation platforms with the 8th generation platforms. The two charts compare the home consoles as well as handhelds.

This first chart compares aligned home console sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.

The 8th generation has struggled to keep up with the 7th generation - thanks in large part to the poor performance of the Wii U relative to its predecessor - and in August 2015 the gap grew by 1.24 million units.

The 7th generation home consoles in their first 22 months sold 58.86 million units, while the 8th generation consoles have sold 46.19 million units. The 7th gen currently leads by a total of 12.67 million units.

7th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 58,858,490

8th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 46,189,096

Total Lead: 12,669,394 – 7th Generation

This second chart compares aligned handheld sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the DS and PSP combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

The 7th generation handhelds in their first 45 months sold 117.20 million units, which is more than double that of the 8th generation. The 8th generation handhelds have sold a total of 58.21 million units. The 7th generation grew its lead by 1.70 million units for the month and currently leads by a total of 58.99 million units.

7th Generation Total Combined Handheld Sales: 117,196,367

8th Generation Total Combined Handheld Sales: 58,210,822

Total Lead: 58,985,545 – 7th Generation

Handheld market is understandable.... mobile phones just eating away at it.
Console market place.... well Wii vs Wii U is a huge setback.
They should have made a Wii 2, with nunchucks instead of the Wii U.

Yeah... Wii 2 would have been definitely the solution chuckles

Damn PS4 is the only thing keeping the 8th gen anywhere near close. The 8TH gen probably wont beat the 7th just because all 3 consoles sold 80mil + and i can not see the Wii U mustering that and no way the PS4 will sell 100 mil +.

The PS4 will easily hit 100 million.

About the PS4, why not, Drakester? In the end, the "struggling" PS3 went to 80m, and the PS4 will likely do better... Which won't change the final generational result, anyway...

Not too surprising, the Wii brought in a lot of casual people who normally didn't game, which caused insane sales and this sales gap.

I would be more interested in the combined software sales of the 7/8 gens to see if the software drop was at at a similar ratio across both gens as the hardware ,this would to some extent show us if the majority of gen 7 casuals where there for just a few specific games.

I suspect 8th gen consoles will only fall further behind.

These charts don't show how the Wii had a great Holiday in 2008 and over 20 million sales in 2009. The 360 is only shown through most of 2007, and that console didn't peak until 2010 and 2011 thanks to a combination of Kinect, CoD Black Ops and MW3, Fable 3, Halo Reach and Anniversary, Gears of War 3, and tons of multiplats. This was also when the PS3 peaked, thanks to finally solving its multiplatform problems, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, FIFA, FF13, and Uncharted 3.

So in 2017 and 2018, can 8th generation consoles sell 40 million consoles a year? That would be after the aligned Wii mania passes. But even in 2014, 8th gen consoles only sold 26 million, and the Wii U is not going to stick around to help out.

That Wii effect turning a 13M PS+Xbox lead into a 13M deficit. But that handheld drop! OMG!!

Good Job Wii U........

Wii U is like the "Gomer Pyle" from the movie Full Metal Jacket of game consoles.

Sony and Microsoft should tag Nintendo with soap bars wrapped in rags.

How'd that turn out in the movie?

About as well as you'd think, but... y'know, the Wii U is already dead.

Nintendo is not happy only be the dinossaur of gaming.
Now they are slowing even the entire 8th gen.
NX better be really good or its goodbye.

Nintendo made so much money with DS and Wii that they can survive at least another 3 more Wii U selling performances ;-) The PS4 wouln't sell so good if we would have a normal selling Nintendo console...
