The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

April 2026 is the 66th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 0.36 million units.
In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.94 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 3.74 million units.
The PS5 has sold 91.95 million units in 66 months, while the PS4 sold 95.68 million units. Month 66 for the PS5 is April 2026 and for the PS4 is April 2019.
The PS4 crossed 100 million in month 72, 105 million in month 74, and 110 million in Month 79. The PS4 sold 117.20 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 25.25 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales.

I was always of the opinion that PS5 would end up selling more than PS4 despite being behind for pretty much most of it's lifetime, simply because i was expecting the gen to last longer, but now even if Sony ends up internally delaying the PS6 away from it's supposed late 2027 launch (Please do Sony, please) the recent price hike really makes me doubt it can ever catch up the PS4
I think the PS6 will just be the new portable's chipset, in a console shell. so, much cheaper to make than PS5. There will also be a much more powerful niche model too (like a pro) but the main base system, people don't realise will actually be weaker and cheaper than a PS5.
there is no point in delaying the ps6 if the costs won't get cheaper
they delayed the n64 to get the price down to $200, but prices were dropping a lot at that time
why would a ps6 be cheaper a year later? it won't be
just release it, and charge what you have to charge
make a cheaper smaller system to replace it when you can, maybe 4 years later, if you have to
i have zero desire to buy a next gen system if they promise ray tracing crap and skimp on ram
32GB of ram or not buying a next gen console, i'll just skip it
new chip factories are slated to come online 2 to 3 years from now.
there is also the financial problems of AI industry which can´t sustain infinite hyperbolic growth, which will have to resolve eventually. and the USA´s push to trigger world economic depression will also curtail prices.
in the mean time, we haven´t even seen what PS5 Pro can do yet. it will soon be getting AMD´s latest rendering software support (base PS5 also, but it is more constrained to implement the newest stuff).
the point is the ps5 got more and more expensive, so no point in waiting if the ps6 will get more and more expensive, release it now, do as best you can
redesign the ps7 to be cheaper, no point in holding back the ps6, it is worth the most value the earlier it comes out
also prices are misleading right now, large companies can sign contracts for cheaper ram than smaller companies
the switch 2 is $450 and the chip in it is very similar to the chip in the NVidia base model N1 (the base N1 has a GPU smaller than the RTX 5050) that nvidia announced for laptops
so why are nvidia laptops using the chip going to cost $1500? they should be able to easily release an ARM laptop with a sub RTX 5050 chip in it for sub $1000
if they don't, it's greed, not costs
