Best Nintendo 3DS Game of 2013 - Article
by Brent Galietti , posted on 07 January 2014 / 6,210 ViewsIt was a tale of two markets for Nintendo in 2013. On the console front, the Wii U continued to sell poorly and many chimed in about Nintendo's perceived doom as a hardware manufacturer. But in the handheld market, Nintendo's 3DS dominated the competition. Third party titles played a role this success, with RPG kingpin Atlus' triple threat of Soul Hackers, Shin Megami Tensei IV and Etrian Odyssey IV, Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies all releasing on the platform, but Nintendo themselves also went all out in 2013 by releasing numerous well-received 3DS titles. The three-dimensioned handheld received a new Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Dillon's Rolling Western, Mario & Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing, Mario & Luigi, Pokemon, and Legend of Zelda. With so many excellent 3DS games, it was hard to pare down the list and then select the best 3DS game of 2013. However, we eventually came to a decision.
The Nominees Are:
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
And The Winner Is...
With Pokemon X & Y, Nintendo brought their world-famous RPG series into the 21st century. The player character finally became customizable, able to change skin tones and apparel, while the new Fairy type, addition of new battle types, dual-type attacks and introduction of Mega Evolutions shook up the metagame. But the big evolution for X & Y came from its social and online features. Interacting with other players online is as easy as tapping their icon on the bottom screen and, from there, players can give each other power ups, trade Pokemon or battle each other from any location in the game; it feels like every other player in the world is at your fingertips. With all that, Pokemon X & Y came out on top for the hotly contested Best Nintendo 3DS Game of 2013 award.
