Welcome to the ‘2014 Sales Overview’ series of articles. Over the next several weeks we will be taking a look at the sales of each console and handheld in 2014: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

In this first ‘2014 Sales Overview’ we will be taking a look at the sales of the PlayStation 4 in 2014.

PlayStation 4 2014 Sales Overview - 13.65M Units Sold, 73.28M Games Sold

Let’s first take a look at the hardware sales of the PlayStation 4. Sony’s 8th generation home consoles sold 13.65 million units worldwide in 2014 to bring its lifetime sales up to 18.5 million units. Hardware sales in 2014 were up 208 percent year-over-year. That is not surprising as the PlayStation 4 was only out in two months in 2013.

The PlayStation 4 sold 6.59 million units during the holiday quarter, October through December. That accounts for 48.3 percent of the total sales for the entire year. December was the biggest month for the console where it sold 3.2 million units, followed by November where it sold 2.31 million units.

Hardware sales also tripled in September to 1.75 million units, when compared to August thanks to the release of Destiny. The PlayStation 4 also sold more than one million units in October where it sold 1.08 million units.

Taking a look at the software sales for the PlayStation 4 in 2014 there were 73.28 million games sold worldwide. That is a massive 664 percent increase year-over-year. There have been a total of 82.87 million games sold for the PlayStation 4.

The top selling game for the PlayStation 4 in 2014 was Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare with sales of 5.80 million units. Electronic Arts’ FIFA 15 was the 2nd bestselling game with sales of 5.65 million units. The next generation re-release of Grand Theft Auto V was the one other game to sell more than five million units for the PlayStation 4, with sales of 5.41 million units.

Activision and Bungie’s Destiny was at number four with sales of 4.55 million units. Ubisoft had three of the top 10 bestselling games for the PlayStation 4 in 2014. Watch Dogs sold 3.66 million units, Assassin’s Creed: Unity sold 2.89 million units and Far Cry 4 sold 2.63 million units.

PS4 is killin' it! Such a great console with 400+ games out or in dev already. (unheard of for a console barely a year old) So happy with my purchase. I already have over 60 games and have only bought like 13 due to all the PS+ & F2P games it has which ROX!
