Steam Hits 8 Million Concurrent Users, Sets New Record - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 29 December 2014 / 8,660 Views

Steam hit a new record over the weekend with more than eight million concurrent users online at the exact same time, according to DSO Gaming. This is in contrast with the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live that were hit with DDoS attacks that brought both services offline.

DOTA 2 continues to be the most played game on Steam, followed by Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Other popular games on Steam include Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Football Manager 2015, Sid Meier's Civilization V, PayDay 2, and the original Counter-Strike.

Xbox Live concurrent record in 2011 was 3.3 million. No updates since then. Has the numbers gone down? And, some of them use Xbox as a DVD player.

I'm actually glad I got a Steam account. The games are great.

Never even been on the site, mostly because i don't play many games on my PC.

Got to admit, I'm using Steam way more than I used to. Mainly because I've done a big upgrade so I don't fancy getting some games on the PS4 because some have frame drops which bugs me so much when I could avoid all of that. I do feel like I am slowly moving towards PC gaming more. Only really keeping my PS4 because of the odd exclusives.

I'm the opposite. I have no time to sit down at a desk and dedicate myself entirely to playing a game in a chair that is either uncomfortable or cost me way too much money so that I can play a rig that could have fed my daughter for three months. To make matters less appealing, I could play that same game at a reasonable level on my PS4, which cost me significantly less and cannot be matched in price:performance by a PC and won't require obscene upgrades in the coming years, instead being guaranteed to play everything for 8-10 years.

I sell computers for a living, and while I can get excited over an awesome rig, I always follow up with "got any consoles?" People come in expecting to buy a computer and just upgrade the graphics card every now and then, but more hours into it than that. There's processor upgrading, which may require a new mother board, which may require new ram. Power supplies go out all of the time. No one seems to know what a UPS is for, and just allow their machines to get surged. And then there's the ever-changing toys, like mice and keyboards and headsets. Even if you stick with one set up as long as you can, most gaming rigs don't last 5 years. But my PS3?

Still trucking. Still plays games. I got it reballed after his first YLOD, and he's never given me an ounce of trouble again.

That's the reason I like console gaming. It doesn't matter how awesome your rig is, or how far ahead PC gaming is: AAA titles sell ten times more on consoles (which is an understatement), so they're made for consoles and ported up. The PC version may be prettier, but I'm playing the same game on my $400 PS4 as some are playing on their $2000 rigs.

thing is they say there were 8 million online on steam at the same time but how many were gaming, how many were updating (steam auto updates your games), how many were just chatting with friends, how many were looking to see what was in the steam sale, it would be far more interesting to see how many were on Origin and U-play, also lets not forget the steam survey they did this year which still shows the biggest majority of steam users use integrated graphics from Intel, both the HD3000 and HD4000 chipsets are the most popular followed by AMD's APU's then the discrete graphics cards where the big cards like the AMD 290 and Nvidia GTX 780Ti have a very small % of cards used, while steam gather popularity it's still got a long way to go before it catches up with the consoles, with these DDOS attacks that might happen a lot sooner.

Uhm the PC enthusiast hardware market is worth more than the console market as it stands. Secondly steam doesn't have a long way to catchup to consoles. It is already ahead of consoles by far. Steams download servers are superior, steams servers are superior, Valves network as a whole is superior. Also Valve doesn't go around spreading their corrupt nature and pissing the wrong people off.

A lot of the online users are like me, not playing a game, just happen to have the default setup for steam where it starts up and logs on when you turn your computer on. I only really play on my main computer but my laptop with integrated intel chipset would be what steam sees me connected with 95% of the time. only time I ever game on it is if I am travelling overseas.

I was one of those 8 million users and out of curiosity I glanced at the top 100 most played games and found about 2.5 million of them were in game. Now, considering the fact that there are several thousand other games on the service I wouldn't be surprised if close to half of Steam's active users at any given time are gaming.

Steam has actually over 100 million active accounts. http://www.pcgamer.com/steam-has-100-million-active-accounts-added-1300-new-games-in-the-past-nine-months/

Active means that the account has at least 1 game and has been logged in at the past 30 days.

Steam has over 100 million active accounts. Search that up. And by active they mean an account that has at least one game and has been logged in at the past 30 days.
