Mirror's Edge 2 Not Dead

Speaking to CVG, DICE has said that the Mirror's Edge franchise is very much alive but they are figuring a way to bring it back.

The first-person, parkour-centric game was released in 2008. Although getting generally favorable reviews, it didn't do as well in sales and failed to meet EA's sales expectations. That alone made Mirror's Edge 2 an uncertainty.

When asked if EA has indeed given up Mirror's Edge Frank Gibeau, EA Games Label chief had this to say:

"I know there are some stories about how EA killed Mirror's Edge. Well, I'm the guy; I greenlight the games. I did not kill it - as God is my witness."

"What we said internally is: 'What do we need to do to make [a sequel] a hit?' We need to go from version one to version two so that it sells two to three times as many, it finds a much bigger audience. The first game from a quality standpoint was good, but now it needs to be great."

Not many people may have bought it but this is still very good news. Mirror's Edge certainly proved a first-person platformer is doable but will people embrace it more the second time around? Mirror's Edge 2 fans just be a little more patient and have a bit more faith in EA/DICE to do the right thing. It could take a while though as DICE is very busy toiling away on Battlefield 3, one of EA's big games for Fall 2011.

@Monteblanco What shooting parts? =/ I played through through the game twice and never once used a gun. There was even an achievement for doing so. Using guns was an option, the other was running. I don't like the idea of removing an option in a game.

It's sad to hear things like this. Innovative new game ideas can't even get a sequel yet we keep getting the same old music/petz game year in and year out. At least there's a chance we might get a new one. Better than nothing.

They should downplay the shooting parts as they slowed down the gameplay and added little to the experience. They could either remove them enterely, as they did in the iPad version, or re-imagine them in a faster gameplay.

There's hope yet then, yey.

I think the thing that will help out Mirror's Edge the most is actual open-worldness. In the first game, you were given a series of levels and, while you could choose how you wanted to navigate the world, you were confined to one entrance, one exit configuration. Such a setup is quite unfriendly to first-time players and since a big portion of the game revolved around momentum, running towards a door that wouldn't open didn't help matters much. For the sequel, they should make Mirror's Edge truly open-world. All doors lead somewhere and are possible avenues of escape/infiltration. All windows can be jumped out of. Essentially, make the stages have multiple entrances and multiple exits ON TOP OF allowing the player to transverse the terrain how he/she chooses.

One of the things that would really help MirrorsEdge is a quicker respawn after mistakes. As frustrating as parts of ME were, Super Meat Boy was far more hairpullingout-insane but its quick retry system made it worth while.
