Rumor: Xbox 360 Elite to Drop to 299 Dollars - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 12 August 2009 / 7,629 Views

They say that when the river sounds, it brings water. And this one brought exactly the water we expected. According to a photo of a Meijer catalogue found by Kotaku, the Xbox 360 Elite will be dropped in price to $299, a $100 drop from its previous $399. Given that this had been rumored for some time, we're not surprised in the slightest, nor think there's a possibilty that this be fake.

If you remember the original rumor, it said that not only the Elite would drop in price, but also that the current Pro model would be phased out, we even posted a news that noticed the lack of info about the Pro in SKUs comparison. With this, that event is even more likely

And so, in the near there'll be two main 360 SKUs, the Arcade and the Elite, unless Microsoft releases a new one, of course. We await an official confirmation for this subject in the words of the company, which shouldn't take much time. The catalog is for August 30th, so we expect word earlier than that.

World don't care M$ price cut, she's now quasi PS2 price and don't sell (Europe, japan). So, what. PS3 Slim is here, hard time for M$.

TheConduit (on 20 August 2009)

With this and the PS3 slim at $299 the Wii's $250 price tag is starting to look a little high

The Wii has had a good run so far but dropping the price to $199 is probable gonna have to happen if they dont want to quickly start losing market share.

And maybe add a hard drive, replace Wii sports with Wii sports resort + motionplus and new colours

PS: dont really care about colors but there are plenty who do.

This is going to get good. Thank God for the recession.
Sony and Microsoft with drastic price cuts. Now let's see how much the Nintendo hype holds momentum not to lose the lead, but the sound in the industry.
I'll stick to my current Elite.

When the price drop comes for the elite i might get one. not to sure yet. still enjoying my PS3 and Wii

If this puts mthe wii at 200€ i'll be happy...i'm sorry for Nintendo, but with i want a cheaper console, and only 50$ less than the elite model will be so bad for them....even if they say they don't want to cut the price, if NSMBW does not give a great and long boost to meet their expectations I think they'll cut the price...

Just like Figlioni said: Won't affect Wii sales as it will still outsell it by a large margin. I think MS will bring out another model with 1 TB drive for Natal at 399

  • 0
pbroy (on 14 August 2009)

Probably just leading the way for the Natal model. Dropping an Elite to a Pro price will make introducing a $399 Natal Model not so expensive. There's no way M$ is going to release a $499 Natal bundle.

MS lying when it claimed it was now targeting Wii and not PS3 anymore confirmed? :-D

Aeros (on 13 August 2009)

I can see M$ adding another system with a 1 TB drive. Considering all the full 360 games u can download. PPl are gonna need more space.

  • 0
Figlioni (on 13 August 2009)

Doesn't matter. The Wii will still outsell it by a large margin.

NightDragon83 (on 13 August 2009)

Instead of eliminating the Pro, why not just cut it back $50 down to $249, the same as the Wii, and keep the Arcade as the entry level 360 while dropping the 60 GB and 120 GB HDDs down to $50 and $100 respectively?

Goddbless (on 13 August 2009)

It was inevitable that MS would cut the price but I didn't think they would cut the Pro.

durtysouthhustlah (on 12 August 2009)

@ Heruamon - I do think MS will drop the price to $175 or $179 - and add a 512mb card too.

I also think this is legit - has been said time and time again. MS thinks the PS3 going down in price is real and not a rumor. MS does not want to be the most expensive thing on the market this holiday season.

If Sony doesn't cut the price on the PS3, it will be game over for them.

Look what sony did, hype the world with BS slim forcing m$ to take action.

Jeez Black huh? That' Sony's color Microsoft. Copy cats...M$ fix the rrod. XD

sirroman (on 12 August 2009)

Hey guys. It seems they are phasing out the Pro.

Just Arcade & Elite.

I was expecting a "slim" Xbox before another price cut. But now I believe the slim will arrive by the same time Natal do. It would be a nice strategy to "reshape" the console so that people see it as more of a "new generation", like some M$ guy told already.

heruamon (on 12 August 2009)

Coporate Espionage??? M$ has been timing moves perfectly this gen, and making sure it can stay on par....I'm just wondering if the arcade model will drop to $179, and get a bigger internal memory.

richardhutnik (on 12 August 2009)

New Elite doesn't pack with any games, is what I see is a possibility here. This way the Pro sells for the same price, with half the harddrive size and missing an HDMI cable.

It's amazing MS is still making a huge profit after all this. If true ill buy one.

  • 0
krimoz911 (on 12 August 2009)

I have to admit ,M$ is always one step ahead this gen

  • 0
ssj12 (on 12 August 2009)

@rulo - the economy is actually turning around now so it isn't as difficult as it was.

If true, Sony is going to need to get a move on with cutting the price.

  • 0
rulo_rezn0r (on 12 August 2009)

That's great, we need that kind of prices in this difficult economic situation

L.C.E.C. (on 12 August 2009)

Also, I think the Wii needs to drop it's price to $200 now... at least in the US...

  • 0
L.C.E.C. (on 12 August 2009)

So what will happen to the current Pros? $250?

  • 0
Chris Hu (on 12 August 2009)

Looks legit to me. Meijer isn't a national chain so you can't expect a high quality add like with Wal-Mart, Target or Best Buy.

  • 0
matt247 (on 12 August 2009)

The store said they were having a sale that week

  • 0
cr00mz (on 12 August 2009)

is this for the americas only? the elite costs about €299 here in sweden.

  • 0
Bokal (on 12 August 2009)

The pic looks photoshoped to me.

But a price cut is totally possible. Elite being more expensive than the PS3 wouldn't work.

  • 0
dolemit3 (on 12 August 2009)

MSFT is making sure they are not selling the most expensive console this holiday season, that's all.

  • 0
Taz! (on 12 August 2009)

I doubt this will boost 360 sales too much, this just means buyers will be getting more for their money.

  • 0
Squall_Leonhart (on 12 August 2009)

Looks like a $299 PS3 is going to have to happen if Sony want to have any hope of keeping up with the 360 this holiday!
