Nintendo reveals new Wii Controller - News

by Brett Walton , posted on 26 February 2009 / 5,530 Views

Nintendo has revealed a new version of the dual-analog Classic Controller for Japanese Wii users. The "Classic Controller Pro" replaces the original's secondary shoulder buttons with a traditional Dual Shock style "two rows of buttons" set up, moves the two analog sticks out a bit from the center, and adds some hand grips.

I just wanted an system actualization thats enable usage of GC controllers on most games, or classic controller usage for GC games.

samus086 (on 27 February 2009)

@FKNetwork : No the classic controller released when the Wii released, this is just a updated version of said controller, for use with VC games... or were you trying to be funny, if you were trying that route, you completly failed

PullusPardus (on 27 February 2009)

Nintendo always loves to go 10 years in the past , 1) the D-Pad is only Y axis and X axis , not corners 2) Its wired 3) the analog is not round and not a 360 Degree , its like the yellow gamecube one.

JoHnNyFr3sC0 (on 27 February 2009)

Wow Nintendo copied Sony...amazing! it's usually Microsoft and Sony copying Nintendo lmao...

carmina2008 (on 27 February 2009)

Wii games! Japanese next! :D

coasterlove (on 26 February 2009)

patjuan32, maybe some people did complain but I don't understand. I thought the classic controller was a fine size. Isn't it more or less the size of the SNES controller? I have fairly good sized hands but I don't have a problem with it but to each their own. TL, what I mean by wired is that you still have to have it wired to something, that being the Wiimote. So I have to have the second controller sitting in my lap. And I never liked the Dreamcast controller for the fact the wire came out the bottom of the controller. I don't like it anymore on the classic controller so that's one positive about this new controller.

SJGohan3972 (on 26 February 2009)

finally, a reason to replace my lost classic controllers. I go through controllers like made (destroyed 4 gamecube controllers and 2 classic controllers in the last 2 years) I think it looks pretty nice, like a nicer version of the old ("classic") dual shock controllers sony makes. This isn't an ugly dualshock, the actual dualshock is an ugly dualshock.

Jexy (on 26 February 2009)

ugly as balls.... GC controllers look better than that. as long as they make a wireless one though... it will be worth getting for wii users

Kwaidd (on 26 February 2009)

not sure why they are even messing around with the "classic controller" idea. instead of coming up with new controller set ups....they should just keep on producing the proven GC controller as I haven't seen a game yet where it can only use the "classic" ok, they put grips on the the GC is only missing a "home" button? /shrug i love my GC and wavebird controllers.

Pristine20 (on 26 February 2009)

That controller looks like the one I've been gaming with all these years. Perhaps I can finally play the wii now.

makingmusic476 (on 26 February 2009)

Can this be used as a GC controller?

rulo_rezn0r (on 26 February 2009)

i think ill stick to my gamestop gamecube controller

OmegaRugalv3 (on 26 February 2009)

"Aj_habfan says: In other words, an ugly Dualshock. Posted on: 02/26/09, 09:28" Yet with a FAR better dpad.

Red4ADevil (on 26 February 2009)

It looks sleeker with the hand grips plus adds more comfort.

Thatmax (on 26 February 2009)

... meh. Itl probly work well, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it looks like... well shit to be frank.

mtofu (on 26 February 2009)

when I first saw the Nintendo Revolution in black I thought it looked too similar to the PS2 and now this solidifies it - The Wii can play PS2 games.

Soriku (on 26 February 2009)

It's not a dualshock, it's a GC controller and CC duct taped together!

pollolealps3 (on 26 February 2009)

wiishock3 lol!!

dib8rman (on 26 February 2009)

Yes, Wiimote has gotten old and is no longer "new" move along now please. Checked out some more about the controller, it's not horrible, and that picture does it justice, it really is just a wavebird, a sucky one bute a wavebird.

MasterZack (on 26 February 2009)

Im a N fan, but i don't like it.

RPGJock (on 26 February 2009)

And what happened to the Nintendo's quote last year, no more "peripherals". This is too funny, seriously. Someone mention in this post, this is for all the PS2 owners that want or have jumped to the Wii train. Maybe this is a beginning of Nintendo's commitment to the core gamers.

FKNetwork (on 26 February 2009)

So all this about the Wiimote being the best thing ever now they bring out a standard controller, does this mean people are getting bored of the wii wand already? shocking! was only a matter of time though.

patjuan32 (on 26 February 2009)

coasterlove, User have complained that the Classic Controller is too small. This is why are 3rd party company made legs for the classic controller for that group of people. It's made by Nyko. Here's the link to the product:

mmnin (on 26 February 2009)

There is a difference between copying a controller within a year of its release or when the idea is still fresh and copying it years later when its been declared a good design and there have already been a few versions of it in different places.

Borzinko (on 26 February 2009)

I'll stick with my WaveBird's thanks. why the hell Nintendo didn't simply upgrade the WaveBird design is just bizzare.....

Procrastinato (on 26 February 2009)

Awesome, because my WaveBird is still a heckuva lot better game controller than the classic controller, or even the Wiimote + nunchuk, for all but a few games!

Bobbuffalo (on 26 February 2009)

@BTFeather..and we were all soo happy until you open you came back... @OT: Looks Ok but why? It seems just a more aesthetic than really useful. I prefer the SNES-like CC

Spoon! (on 26 February 2009)

@drakesfortune, I thought it was a step back as the classic controller is the past and the motion controller was the innovative new input for playing games. Now granted, some games are better with this old controller, but is it because the controller is better than the motion controls or just that the developers haven't put enough thought into implementing motion control. If the latter is the case then I still think it is a step backward as developers will continue to think of motion control as secondary when they know the classic control scheme is still present. Just my 2 cents.

TL (on 26 February 2009)

It's only wired in the sense that it attaches to the Wii remote. It doesn't attach to the console.

TL (on 26 February 2009)

The original classic controller had 4 shoulder buttons. They just moved them. Also, everyone mentioning the PS2; you realize the PS2 controller was just a SNES controller with handles, right? The Playstation controller didn't even have analog sticks until Nintendo announced an analog stick for the N64.

coasterlove (on 26 February 2009)

Hmmm... I'm curious about this new controller but it looks like an add on to the classic controller. What makes me most curious is why did Nintendo see a reason to make a new version of the classic. I don't think there was a lot of desire for a new one, so why make one unless Nintendo has something in mind to use it for. The thing I don't like about this new controller is that it's still wired. What's the deal with that? This generation has featured mostly all wireless controllers and most gamers seem to prefer them, I know I do.

786_ali (on 26 February 2009)

sony buys nintendo CONFIRMED!!!

The Anarchyz (on 26 February 2009)

A Nintendo Dualshock!!! finally they realized that the SNES layout perfected by Sony was the best one... As for the D-Pad in the bottom, i personally hate that MS config, i like my two analogs aligned at the same height, and my D-Pad apart...

Johann (on 26 February 2009)

What a monster! I love it!

radha (on 26 February 2009)

oh albino dualshock but i like a lot, if i get a wii this is a must for me

PSwii60 (on 26 February 2009)

hmm.. i agree i only care for that grody li'l thang to be wireless and i'm content enuff

GooseGaws (on 26 February 2009)

@Retrasado: Uh... Gamecube?

Blackmagic5814 (on 26 February 2009)

I like it, but dont understand the need for it.

AaronSOLDIER (on 26 February 2009)

Sony didn't copy the motion idea for the PS controller - there was a motion controller for Warhawk on the PS1 in the 90's - thats where Sony got it from

Retrasado (on 26 February 2009)

^^ yeah, but MS is the only one who ever did that. Every other game controller, without exception, has this configuration. Anyway, it comes down to personal preference regardless. also, that's one fugly controller imo

samus086 (on 26 February 2009)

the only thing keeping this controller from perfection is the fact that the left analog stick is still on the bottom, they should really switch it with the D-pad... I would buy 4 of them on day 1 if they did the switch. they fixed most of the problems I have had with the orinigal classic controller except for that fact... OH and Nintendo, please bring us the Japan only SNES controller for the Wii that we have gotten teased with for the last year already, would work great for all those NES and SNES games I already have downloaded, the original classic and Wiimote sideways give my big hands some massive cramps

Maynard_Tool (on 26 February 2009)

Well, it's just like the classic controller. But, is this gonna have a rumble future???? would it work with Game Cube games???? Those are the requirements to buy it (at least for me) and of course, not too expensive

bardicverse (on 26 February 2009)

^^^^ what? Dude, just... just stop. The Wiimote works perfectly. Go play RE4 on the Wii and get back to me. Cool on the classic. Personally I hate dual shoulder buttons, the main reason why I couldn stand the Playstation brand controllers

BTFeather55 (on 26 February 2009)

It has taken this long for them to do it, but it looks like Nintendo has finally come up with a good controller for the Wii that should warrent purchase of the system. Hopefully it will become the standard controller for all Wii games and replace the obsolete and cumbersome Wiimote.

koopatrooper (on 26 February 2009)

atleast the cord is where it supposed to be: at the top

drakesfortune (on 26 February 2009)

"Isn't this a step backwards?" No, no it's not. It's a step in the right direction for most games. Sure, some games are great with motion controls, but most games I enjoy are terrible with motion controls. So this is a step forward for Nintendo.

dib8rman (on 26 February 2009)

IT may be really small, then it wouldn't look as bad as that thing is making it seem, outside of that it's a freakish dual shock with a damn cord, that cord is the worst feature, it's ugly only because of that.

Aquietguy (on 26 February 2009)

It looks like a classic controller with some kind of attachment under it.

lolita (on 26 February 2009)

To me it looks pretty much the same except for the extra bits so that it's more comfy to hold. My bf haven't got classic controllers yet so I'll tell him to wait for this one... :3

Spoon! (on 26 February 2009)

Isn't this a step backwards?

FJ-Warez (on 26 February 2009)

Maybe they will try to add some PS games to the VC store, who knows, still, looks weird...

JPL78 (on 26 February 2009)

Is it just me or is this an admission from Nintendo that, yes, people still like regular controllers and not everyone prefers the Wiimote?

Wyku (on 26 February 2009)

Just because it's a "classic" controller doesn't mean it couldn't upgrade to wireless technology.

drakesfortune (on 26 February 2009)

For a company that usually nails the aesthetic side of things, they sure make ugly controllers. Also, those triggers look like garbage. Could they at least not do triggers like PS360? I mean, it is kind of the standard now, and it's very, very useful in games to have the ps360 style triggers. Hopefully gamers will be able to play FPS and TPS games with that pad and gain control of the camera.

Mummelmann (on 26 February 2009)

This is very good news, the biggest drawback by far with the Wii today is the controller imo! Another reason to get one! ;-)

johnlucas (on 26 February 2009)

@Kantor: Yes, for once. Nintendo copied Sony. However, the PlayStation was originally a Nintendo idea so in the end they copied from themselves. Ha! Where's the rumble? That's all I'm saying. People must experience VC Star Fox 64 (Lylat Wars) the right way. No rumble, no true Star Fox 64 experience. Will that patent troll from east Texas try to ruin this one too? John Lucas

toastboy44562 (on 26 February 2009)

awesome new controller, I might actually play my wii now!

Pika-Boo! (on 26 February 2009)

@Kantor ...I agree that this does look to be a straight Playstation controller design! So for once perhaps Nintendo DID look to Sony's model. ...But that would be forgetting how... a) The PS1 joypad was a straight rip-off of the SNES joypad. b) The PS2 joypad was directly taken from the N64 joypad (Analogue stick + Trigger buttons) c) The PS3 joypad (motion controll) was a blatant rip from the Wiimote. Basically Sony may be many things (good and bad), but 'original' they ain't!! So in summary... Classic Controller Pro... influenced by Sony (via Nintendo, via Nintendo, via Nintendo). Or... Nintendo copies Sony, copies Nintendo, copies Nintendo, copies Nintendo = NINTENDO WIN!!!

Strategyking92 (on 26 February 2009)

So it's the same but.. fatter? Nice.

mike_intellivision (on 26 February 2009)

Now I wish I had not bought a second classic controller last year. I really like the looks of this one. Handles are most welcomed. Mike from Morgantown

Kantor (on 26 February 2009)

Nobody else is going to say this, so: NINTENDO COPIES SONY CONFIRMED! Lol :-D

Phoenix_Wiight (on 26 February 2009)

they should of released this at the beginning of the wii's life, so fanboys who said the wii controls suck would have little to nothing to complain about.

V-r0cK (on 26 February 2009)

So its the Classic controller with legs? Im sure this is probably more comfortable as well. Hope its not too pricey.

dark_gh0st_b0y (on 26 February 2009)

i find it great in appearance

Raido (on 26 February 2009)

Looks good ^^

masschamber (on 26 February 2009)

there were 4 triggers on the original classic controller, the second set was just closer to the center of the controller as opposed to being behind the first pair

jlauro (on 26 February 2009)

PS2 VC games coming to the Wii confirmed! ;)

Jacrid (on 26 February 2009)

This seems like the old one + 2 more trigger... i guess u can buy the second part separately so you don't have to throw more money out the window...

Alby_da_Wolf (on 26 February 2009)

Really ugly, but if the ergonomics are right, who cares? Anyhow, Nintendo trying to lure pot-bellied hardcore gamers confirmed? :-D

Euphoria14 (on 26 February 2009)

At least the cord is on top now instead of on the bottom. Now that was a horrible placement on the controller. I wish this would have come out at the start, I like it much much more.

here_wii_go (on 26 February 2009)

TWRoO (on 26 February 2009)

@cheese_man... then you hve poor eyesight, most Nintendo hardware looks really nice now. I agree on this one though, it's ugly.

thetonestarr (on 26 February 2009)

The Classic Controller has four shoulder buttons, fellas. Pay attention. All I'm concerned with is whether or not this thing has rumble. I'll consider buying if it doesn't, but if it does, it's a sure buy. I doubt it does though. =/

MozBlue (on 26 February 2009)

why is every one so negative!! This is very welcomed wont have to mess about with wavebirds. though looks like it another plug into the wiimote jobby which is a shame a standalone wireless pad would be better even if it did put the price up by £10

Kenryoku_Maxis (on 26 February 2009)

All I gotta say is really...why 4 Shoulder buttons? Do any VC systems have more than 2 shoulder buttons? Why not just upgrade the controller to have the N64 style grips (those are fine) but just have 2 bigger shoulder buttons with GC style grooves?

Ostro (on 26 February 2009)

The left stick needs to be changed with the digipad. It's weird to play newer games that way. Why do we need 4 shoulder buttons now? Useless copy. And, what Roma said, only good point xD

shams (on 26 February 2009)

Meh, looks the same to me. Barely news at all...

Roma (on 26 February 2009)

Well at least it has the GC handles witch are way more comfortable than the dualshock

WessleWoggle (on 26 February 2009)

I Must get it! ZOMG ZOMG

Hapimeses (on 26 February 2009)

Aj_habfan hit the goomba on the head there. Man, that's one ugly Dualshock. Still, for PS2 peeps that upgraded to the Wii, it may be a welcome addition.

TopCat8 (on 26 February 2009)

^^ What he said.

Aj_habfan (on 26 February 2009)

In other words, an ugly Dualshock.

wfz (on 26 February 2009)

Interesting... but unless it's very cheap I'll most likely not be getting it. Maybe if I get quite a few VC games that require the CC then I'll buy it.
