Earthbound Making a Comeback? - News

Earthbound (known as Mother 2 in Japan) is one of the best games for the Super Nintendo, and likewise its follow-up Mother 3 is one of the best games for the Gameboy Advance. So, Earthbound/Mother fans should take rejoice in this news:

Shigesato Itoi, driving force behind the series, announced to Twitter today the status of the Mother series.

"Since it’s now okay to blurt this out, here goes: the “MOTHER republication” thing I mentioned briefly before is making progress.

It’s not “(MOTHER) 4″, though! This has to do with making “MOTHER” playable. I can’t give out any details just yet, but I do at least need to say that it isn’t 4.

The tweets were translated from Japanese, so in this context "playable" probably means making the games available for a wide audience, since the original Mother and Mother 3 were never officially released outside of Japan, and Earthbound is only officially available on its out-of-print SNES cartridge.

Itoi states that he's not making Mother 4, so what could this mean? Ports for the Wii U virtual console or 3DS eShop? Mobile phone releases? We'll just have to wait and see!

Props to Earthbound Central for the translation!
