DayZ Devs Explain Delay for Standalone Edition - News
by Jake Weston , posted on 07 January 2013 / 2,211 ViewsARMA 2 mod DayZ took the PC world by storm when it released in 2012, with its success prompting mod-lead Dean Hall and ARMA publisher Bohemia Interactive to team up for an official release. Originally announced for a 2012 launch, the standalone edition of DayZ has since been delayed. Today, the developers revealed why.
According to the official DayZ blog: "DayZ Standalone isn’t here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold - to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be. This blew any initial plans we had dictated to pieces."
The post went on to detail some of the new inventory, art, and UI changes currently being implemented into the new version, as well as announcing that a closed beta of approximately 500-1000 players will begin soon.
One of the team members in charge of map design, Ivan Buchta, is one of the two Bohemian Interactive designers currently imprisoned in Greece on espionage charges, but the post has stated that he is able to provide input on design through sending letters.
There are currently no set release date for the standalone version of DayZ, but we remain optimistic that the extra development time can only result in a better product.
