Gearbox Almost Made a Call of Duty Game - News
by Jake Weston , posted on 11 January 2013 / 2,885 ViewsGearbox Software has been setting the world on fire for the last few years with their successful Borderlands franchise, but apparently Gearbox was offered the chance to develop an entry in Activision's Call of Duty franchise.
Speaking to German gaming site KGN, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that Activision came to them to make a Call of Duty game, but Pitchford turned them down, stating that making the game would not have been a "significant challenge."
Here's a translation of an excerpt from the interview, thanks to Neogaf forums user shinobi602:
"I don’t think there’s anything to accomplish there. I think if I was only in it for the money I would’ve done that . . . I think to do 'Call of Duty' right you need to do what needs to be done and there are a lot of people who can do that. For us it wouldn’t add to our credibility, it wouldn’t move us forward. There would be no significant challenge that would be gratifying to overcome."
Gearbox is no stranger to shooter franchises, from Borderlands, to their World War II-themed Brothers in Arms, to their salvaging of Duke Nukem Forever, and their upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines.
Personally, I think Pitchford's statements are a little loaded, especially considering the changes brought by Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Gearbox's take on the franchise could have been quite an interesting thing to see.
