Earlier today Deep Silver revealed the 'Zombie Bait Edition' of Dead Island: Riptide (read our hands-on preview here), for Europe and Australia. As well as the usual DLC, steelbook, collector's edition box and bonus artwork that these editions often contain, the Zombie Bate Edition of Riptide includes a decapitated bikini-clad female torso (see image below).

Apparently this has caused outrage in some quarters. The company has now released a statement apologising for any potential offence this may have caused:

"A decision was made to include a gruesome statue of a zombie torso, which was cut up like many of our fans had done to the undead enemies in the original Dead Island.

We sincerely regret this choice. For now, we want to reiterate to the community, fans and industry how deeply sorry we are, and that we are committed to making sure this will never happen again."

Whether this means the Zombie Bait Edition will now be altered in some way remains to be seen.

But what to make of the more general issues this raises? Is this yet another example of a culture of misogyny and violence in the gaming industry, or is it just politically correct overreacting? Or, alternatively, maybe it's all just a PR stunt...
