DFC Intelligence: Xbox 360 to Pass Wii in the US by 2017 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 15 January 2013 / 6,741 Views

According to a report by DFC Intelligence the Wii will not be the bestselling 7th generation home console in the US. DFC believes that the Xbox 360 by the time it is done selling will have passed the Wii.

"Amazingly Microsoft didn't have to do much exaggerating as in its seventh full year on the market the Xbox 360 had a stellar performance. For its generation, the Xbox 360, not the Wii, will end up as the number one selling console system in the US," said DFC.

DFC has given its forecast for the three 7th generation home consoles. The Xbox 360 is expected to sell 46.1 million units by 2017 in the US, while the Wii is expected to sell 42.1 million units. The PlayStation 3 lags behind with 33.5 million units sold.

"Shockingly it was in the later years of its life that the Xbox 360 really took off," DFC added. "The success of Microsoft and the Xbox 360 during the past two years highlights a radical changing of the guard in the game industry. Much has been made about a steady video game sales decline in the past three years."

2017?! we're gonna have the xbox360 still supported for the next 4 years? considering how quickly MS made the jump from the original Xbox to the 360 this info is just completely off.

The system could still be selling in small quantities in the USA in 2016/2017, but it's going to pass the Wii this year. I think 2017 is used because that's the point where 360 will certainly be discontinued.

360 numbers will decline rapidly with 720 launch.

True, but before the 720 launches the gap is gonna be much smaller.

Poorly labeled Article. It doesn't say 360 will pass Wii un USA by 2017, it says 360 will already be 4 million units ahead of Wii in 2017. The 360 is what 2 million units behind the Wii in USA? 360 will surpass Wii in USA, in 2013.

The 360 won't be around in 2017, so this just ridiculous.

Xbox360 only sells in America and UK (the american products lovers).
In the rest of the world xbox360 is a complete outsider and will always been the 3rd of this gen (these are facts, not opinions).

I'd be amazed if MS keeps producing 360 consoles beyond 2014.

Anyhow, I didn't know the 360 was so close to Wii in US sales. 360 is bigger in the US then I was even aware.

360 won't be selling by the end of 2015, possibly earlier. It may only see out holiday 2014 assuming nextbox releases this year. But it will still overtake Wii. Still, now that Wii is last gen for Nintendo it means Nintendo won when it mattered. Same as PS3 overtaking 360 for 2nd spot globally. Technically PS3 will be the #2 7th gen console, but 360 will be #2 for when it actually mattered.

I've said it before and I'm saying it again.

The 360 now is exactly what the Wii was when it came out.
A redesigned, re-imagined version of matured technology, that can be sold at a very reasonable price, coupled with an inventive way of interacting with the games.

They pulled the redesign and bundling with Kinect DIRECTLY from Nintendo's new playbook, and they pulled it off with flying numbers.

Add your comment...Sorry but the Xbox will pass the Wii in the U.S by the end of this year. The Wii is at 44 million and the Xbox is at 42 million. Its safe to say Xbox will be the number 1 selling console in america this gen. Also I dont see a console knocking them out of the number 1 spot until the new Xbox is released in novemebr. What is it 24 months straight now number 1 selling console in the U.S?Yea 360 is king this gen no doubt.Good job MS
