Square-Enix wants to make monster slaying a social activity.

Today, the company announced a new title, Heroes of Ruin, that is being custom-built for the Nintendo 3DS and will support  StreetPass and SpotPass, along with a host of other online and social features.

"With Heroes of Ruin  we wanted to take the game experience beyond the confines of the console’s two screens," said Square Enix London Studios General Manager Lee Singleton. "Nintendo 3DS’ online and social features allow us to do so much more than multiplayer, using both StreetPass and SpotPass to give players innovative ways of enhancing their experience."

Through StreetPass, players will be able to buy and sell items picked up in battle on an in-game Traders Network, which will have an ever-changing inventory updated from each player passed by in public. SpotPass, meanwhile, will reward players with rare one-off items or unique challenges through local wi-fi hotspots. There will also be daily challenges and quests available through the game's community website.

Heroes of Ruin will feature drop-in/drop-out co-op multiplayer for up to four players who will explore a world that will change every time they play through the use of dynamic environments, layouts and routes.

Heroes of Ruin will be available in early 2012.
