Nintendo Officially Confirms Wii Successor - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 25 April 2011 / 8,493 Views

Nintendo officially confirmed that they are working on a successor to their hugely successful Wii console, codenamed Project Cafe, that is planned to launch in 2012. The confirmation came from a note published alongside their 2011 financial statement. Nintendo also confirmed that they plan to make the system playable at E3 2011 and will presumably officially unveil the console and early games at their E3 Press Event.

The full text is shown below:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.

We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.

Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012.

Nintendo have confirmed no details on the machine itself - rumours of the last couple of weeks have suggested a console with HD capabilities and "significantly more powerful" than Xbox360 and PS3, a tablet-style controller with a 6 inch screen and dual analogue sticks, the ability to stream content straight to the controllers, backward compatibility with Wii, a price point of $350-400, and even first images of what the new console might look like. Nintendo seems to be positioning the new hardware as a move away from the Wii motion concept (but still backward-compatible) and some rumours have suggested the final name could be "Stream" with the focus on the individual screen in each controller and game mechanics working around the idea that each player could play games from their own perspective and even in different rooms. Of course much of this is speculation and rumor at this stage but we all know there is no smoke without fire.

We will bring you more information on the system as it becomes available.

please copy the 360 controller, still the best control set up to date.

I liked the gamecube controller equally, but yeah the 360 controller is currently the best set up, though it could have better parts.

@adsl... I MUCH prefer dual analog sticks for game consoles to having to hold the controller pointed at the screen constantly (Wii) or sliding my thumbs across a touch screen simulating analog sticks (DS, iPad, iPod Touch, etc.)

Touch screen is not a replacement for dual analog control... only the keyboard and mouse can top that setup.

Awww. Nintendo Conference will be last of the big three. Dunno why, but after this confirmation and even when I have read a lot of rumors, is like I don't believe any of them. Seems that they can surprise me.

dual analogue sticks = epic failure. Please Nintendo don't make me use a analog to aim again.

All my predictions are coming true. New DS in 2011 and new Console in 2012. Now all we can hope is third parties will actually jump onto the new Nintendo system.

I really love nintendo. I'm hoping that the stream releases after the Wii hits the 100 million consoles sold mark. That would be sweet.

I'd just like to add if Nintendo is smart they will sell these things as cheap as possible. There goal should be to flood the market with Cafe's so a year or two later when MS and Sony release even more powerful systems than the Cafe they have enough of a base to keep the 3'rd party games and sales high.

Heat (on 25 April 2011)

I think this is very clever and great timing for Nintendo - not so much for Sony and Microsoft who had much lengthier plans for their consoles. However, I hope it doesn't force either of the two companies into bringing out successors to the PS3 and Xbox 360 too early.

Wiimoteplus should be good enough for motion-controled games. As other people already stated, the backwards-compatibility of the controler is the big advantage of Ninty. So the Wii-users can use their Wiimotes and that is a really big userbase right from the start. The new controler should be in a different direction, like the rumored touchscreen imo. And then we still got the classic controler model. That would be a hell of a combination with a controler for every type of gamer. Ninty would get the Wiimote users, the classical-hardcore gamer and some touchscreen fans from DS and apple.

I'm super excited about this. I haven't owned a Nintendo console in a very long time. I hope they have M games and good third party games. I'd like to pay $300. If it's more than $400 I will not buy it till it drops in price.

Hey, well this is AWESOME!!! I can't wait to see what Nintendo has in store to show everyone for E3 :).

  • 0
ilovetogame (on 25 April 2011)

i can't wait for E3. i really hope Nintendo just destroys all these screen on the controller rumors and is actually going with the sensible thing which is advancing motion controls. no doubt tapping into the touch screen market that the phones have is a good idea, but its kinda like a side project. that's portable territory, that's 3DS territory. and meanwhile if they bring out that controller instead of new advanced motion controls they are just abandoning the market that gave them by far their most successful console ever.

if all nintendo has to offer is a touch screen controller they are gonna be destroyed by the next microsoft and sony systems. i'm a hardcore nintendo fan and i want to see them perfect the wii technology with a graphically superb system. i mean thats what everyone has been clamoring for. and HD Wii with advanced motion controls! thats what this gen was leading towards, if they abandon that they abandon their victory this gen. they cannot just settle for using the rather imprecise wii controller for any motion games that come out next gen.

scorptile (on 25 April 2011)

if what i think they will do is to actually have two different models one where you can use your DS as a controller bringing the price of the console down to 150-200 or one with a controller at 300 and a game of course. or im thinking the controller rumors are all false because remember what the wiimote looked like before the official release? i think they will make a console roughly still at their price point of 200-250. i see a modification of the wiimote but i think we are looking at something similar to a snes type of controller. with the wiimote compatible with the new system. the 3DS is the direct compitition to the ipod and ipad. dont need any other divices to compete also.

for me a HD wii with a mod of the controller to where its alot like the snes would be very idea and with more platformers like NSMBWII would be idea. if anyone hasnt noticed the gamepad on the snes has withstood the test of time and is still considered one amazing controller in itself. people mod that controller and they buy similar controllers for pc which is very popular. i think they should make a "wii" snes type of controller myself and for the games people likes to use for the joysticks have a "clip on" priced at about ten bucks to add to the controller to use for like galaxy and stuff like that. and as for racing make the controller easier to use by itself without a "wheel". that would be the most idea controller and like i said wiimotes still compatible with the new system as well.

@dsage01
What an intelligent argument. Going after your assumption, Nintendo will still be leading the market till PS4/720 arrive in 2014 or later. Well, then the next Nintendo is on the way.
So, ROFL, Fail! 720/PS4 will die compared to the N7.

So, Nintendo wins E3 again right?

  • 0
cromeros (on 25 April 2011)

Sorry Sony... sorry Microsoft... Kinect should have been released on a console more powerful than Xbox 360... its successors arrive until 2014?.. Definitely not ... This year, killing all hopes of overcoming a Wii ... for Wii at this point and as its low sales exceed 100 million units, something that neither PS3 and Xbox360 will overcome ... After all, Nintendo's little David could with the two Goliaths!!!... XD

If what ioi says is true about that Nintendo touch screen is to compete with Apple, I think it'd be cool idea if you can purchase apps and small games for the new Nintendo system and can detach the touch screen turning it into a portable device allowing you to play those small games and use those apps on the go. However that'd be a really expensive controller and wouldnt be good for Nintendo to have two different portable devices on the market simultaneously. Just my thought, i cant wait for more details at E3.

I think VGChartz figure of 86,275,074 to 2nd April compared to Nintendo's figure of 86.010,000 to the end of March is remarkably good myelf!

Only around 250,000 units difference.

  • 0
Podings (on 25 April 2011)

I fucking hate gamers.

Now Nintendo are curling back up and sticking two analog sticks on their primary controller again, instead of perfecting motion controls, just to please the assholes that have baselessly hated on the Wiimote for almost five years.

If things are as they seem, I am loosing faith in Nintendo. God fucking dammit. I am not buying that crap, and definitely not at over $300.

  • 0
Roma (on 25 April 2011)

so to keep motion controls like the ones on Wii they will need to pack in both the one with the screen on and a Wii Mote and nun chuck. what about the rumor that it would not have a touch screen on the controller and that it will have a way better motion controller than the Wii one?

anyway can't wait till E3 :D:D:D:D:D!!!

  • 0
welshbloke (on 25 April 2011)

Stagnating because of the need for a fresh new console or stagnating because people do not have the cash to spend.? I would suggest the latter but the Wii was always a 5 year cyclic device.

Time will tell but I think it will be price and the all important "innovation" that is hinted at that will be what makes or breaks this console.

@Spedfrom: We wont hear of an PS4 until 2012 e3 and it wont be released until 2014 at min. I am pegging an 2015 release but nintendo may force them early.

  • 0

They definitely need a pricecut and a new wave of software to end the Wii with a bang...

  • 0

I just hope PS3 doesn't have a successor until 2013 at the earlist.

  • 0
Nintendogamer (on 25 April 2011)

Makes me to believe that the price cut in May is really inevitable now, down to $150 with bundles and so on, is reasonable with the new system being announced. Wii does have a little life left as conegamer said, come black Friday, Wii could be as cheap as $99, now that will move some systems.

Dr.Grass (on 25 April 2011)

@Jumpin

There are tons of first class games on the PS3 and more coming out all the time. I cannot see why you don't ''touch your PS3 for months''. That simply means you are not so enthusiastic about gaming anymore.

  • 0
Immortal (on 25 April 2011)

At least they aren't rushing it to 2011. I really think Wii has life left with some price cuts, despite its beyond dismal Q1.
I'd like to see what they really have to offer with the console, though. The rumours seem a little ridiculous to me right now, but, well, it's not as if Nintendo hasn't convinced me to do ridiculous stuff before!

  • 0
AmericanAli (on 25 April 2011)

awesome! cant wait! :D

  • 0
Jumpin (on 25 April 2011)

I'm also in the opinion that a new console is due; and 2012 is actually a little late for my liking. I used to play Wii and PS3 about every day, but nowadays I go entire months without touching either. I play way more old games now than I did before.

Finally!

Also, Cafe is a nice codename - I like it

  • 0
CowLPH (on 25 April 2011)

I am no financial sales analysis so I do not know if I am right or not. I just do not think the market is ready for another console to tell you the truth. With such a overly saturated game console market, its hard to predict how a new console will adapt. Not only do I think that "Project Cafe" will damper the sales of the 3DS, but this it might not even sell well.

However, I must admit that Ninendo is playing it risky and if the rumor of the controller scheme is true, it will be an interesting battle. Just my thoughts! =)

Wii must have many millions of consoles left to sell at sub $100 / £100 price
