Flawless Victory! Mortal Kombat Gets 10 Guinness World Records - News

If there was any particular video game series that's been subject to controversy, it has to be Mortal Kombat.
And evidently, that controversy has been enough to get the series into the upper echelons of honor for achievement, garnering 10 records in the Gamer's Edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. Seriously.
Ripten has noted all ten items in the book, covering everything from the movie to the ESRB ratings system. You read that right: Mortal Kombat almost crashed the legal party once before, prompting the gaming industry to respond with the now-ubiquitous rating system before the Stateside population could end up in the same mess that now exists down under as of this writing.
At any rate, here's the full list, in no particular order:
- Longest serving video game voice actor (Ed Boon)
- Earliest game to trigger the setup of a ratings board (ESRB)
- Largest promotional campaign for a fighting video game (Various instances)
- Most numbered entries in a fighting game series
- Earliest one-on-one fighting video game to use digitized sprites (Mortal Kombat, 1992)
- Earliest video game poster censorship (Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, 2003)
- Earliest successful console fighting game
- Earliest 3D fighting game to incorporate online play (Mortal Kombat: Deception, 2004)
- Highest-grossing film based on a fighting video game series (Mortal Kombat, 1996)

These are the only ones I'd consider legitimate records.
Everything else is "ifs" "ands" "buts" and very subjective.
I hear it is also rumored to get the World Record for the first fighting game to have a character called "Sub-Zero" and also the first fighting game to spell Combat with a K instead of a C.

hmmm.. as many have commented, I find these records to be 'not that well researched'. Cases in point. Street fighter 2 on the SNES (HUGE success). Pit fighter was before Mortal Kombat, but if the rest of the description of that record read 'on a home console' then I think technically MK would be the first (not sure though). Does not seem like this is the longest running fighting game series as several have mentioned Wow Guiness, did you let MK just come up with, AND pick their awards? Next you're going to tell me that Call of duty was the 'First successful first person shooter game called 'Call of Duty'". :I

Could you get anymore contrived then these awards categories? What a damn joke. Also earliest succesfull console fighter? Hello, Street Fighter 2 anyone? Hell it even outsold MK.

Lol, you're right. Pit Fighter came out a 2 years before MK. I don't know if there were any before that used digitized actors. Either way, that's 3 awards so far that were given to the wrong game.

You're right. Street Fighter 2 released about a year before MK did on the home consoles. And I'm 100% sure it was a success, too. Also, I think KoF should win that other record, not MK.

I agree with you. All these new records are is just to promote Mortal Kombat. They're probably getting paid.
