Final Fantasy XIII Sells More Than 1.5 Million First Week - News

The definitive Famitsu figure for Final Fantasy XIII is in. With bundles included, the 13th instalment in the JRPG series sold 1,516,532 units. In addition, the PS3 hardware saw an expected increase, with sales in the week amounting to 245,406 (again, bundles included). This is the highest week of sales for the PS3 ever in Japan.
Needless to say, FF13 has become the best-selling PS3 game in Japan, surpassing Metal Gear Solid 4's by more than double its LTD. Also worth noting, the game sold to around 35% of PS3 owners in Japan (that is, more than 1 in 3 owners bought the game first week)

@Makaha: The 360's best week was 872,493 according to VGC. That was for the 2008 week equivalent to the week just ended. Whether PS3 sells 1 million or not, it should still end up the best week ever for an HD console.

the world wide hardware gap between the 360 and the PS3 will be around 5.5 million before 2010, partly thanks to Japan
What I'm wondering is if the PS3 reaches 1 million weekly worldwide hardware sales this week, and it looks likely that it will, because of the Japan hardware numbers, has the 360 ever had a hardware sales week of 1 million units?
I'm too lazy to look it up....
Either way, the PS3 hardware numbers for the total of 2009 looks to be better than any previous year the 360 had, even topping the 360's 2008

the 500,000 PS3 next weeks is impossible. That would also mean about 600,000 of FF XIII selling next week. I will even be surprise if it stays above 200,000(PS3 sales). And FF XIII just the highest selling game on the PS3 in Japan, it's the more than the double of the previous best selling game on the PS3 in japan (MGS 4 at 720,000 copies sold)
@no1stopme I don't think it's that many people who'll import to the US. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't even think it has the English audio track and text is probably in Japanese. Plus it'll cost more than the US release.

@Peachbuggy, all PS3 owners said that number was low balled, we were right, we estimated between 245k-300k, so we are not that far off. Therefore u saying that we dont say numbers is stupid.
That 35% number could easily be off. The PS3 consoles in the US can play Japanese PS3 games. Have the PS3 owners in the US that bought FF13 been taken out of these figures? Any idea how many PS3 owners in the US buy Japanese games? E.g., isn't Bayonetta out in Japan but not yet in the US :-(

To all these people saying preview Pwned etc. Why do you bother reading it then? Remember someone saying PS3 fanboys are the most annoying, i guess this just proves it. The people who do the previews on this site do it all in their own time, unpaid and are not infallible. They have even admitted it is mainly guesswork. I feel they should be appreciated more, giving free, amazingly accurate numbers 52 weeks a year. I think some of the "amateur" so-called analysts on this site should give them a break. Or better still, come up with their own numbers week in, week out. Then we can all LOL when they are regularly and massively wrong!

That's insane. I can hardly believe it has a 1/3 attach rate in 1 week. I wonder if it'll get to 1/2 attach rate.
I expect this to sell 2.4mil life time. Sorta looks like FF X-2 sales.. but if the game is higher in quality, it might have better legs.

People, stop bringing the "user base" argument all the time. It has some meaning in games like NSMBWii, Cod, Pro Evolution, games that have mainstream appeal.
FFXIII would have breaked a million even if the PS3 userbase was 2 million in Japan. These franchises have very loyal followers, most probably bought a PS3 to play FFXIII in the first place.
On topic, amazing sales, as expected from a Final Fantasy. This has been a very good year for the Japanese market, FFXIII, DQIX, MH3 (also known as "da bomb"), NSMBWii, and many smaller games.
I hope this revitalizes consoles in Japan. If you look at the latest charts, DS and PSP seem almost irrelevant...
