Switch 2 Sales Hit 2.4 Million in the US in August, NBA 2K26 Top Game - Sales
by William D'Angelo , posted on 08 October 2025 / 12,161 ViewsThe Nintendo Switch 2 in its third month remained the best-selling console in the US for August 2025 in terms of units sold and dollar sales, according to figures from Circana (formerly The NPD Group). Circana includes the dates for the four-week period of August 3 to 30.
Circana revealed the Switch 2 has now sold around 2.4 million units in the US and is currently tracking 77 percent ahead of the original Nintendo Switch after three months. The Switch 2 is now tracking ahead of the previous record holder - the PlayStation 4 - after three months, which sold 2.2 million units during the three months ending January 2014.
Hardware sales for the Switch 2 were enough to offset the double-digital percentage declines in the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

Overall spending on video games in August increased 11 percent year-on-year from $4.18 billion to $4.66 billion. Spending on video game content increased 11 percent from 3.77 billion to $4.18 billion, while video game hardware sales increased 32 percent from $236 million to $312 million. Spending on accessories decreased six percent from $160 million to $169 million.
In terms of 2025 total sales, overall spending on video games is up one percent year-on-year from $37.06 billion to $37.33 billion. Spending on video game content decreased less than one percent from $32.94 billion to $32.85 billion, while video game hardware sales grew 20 percent from $2.39 billion to $2.86 billion. Spending on accessories decreased six percent from $1.72 billion to $1.63 billion.
"Monthly hardware spending increased by 32% when compared to a year ago, to $312M," said Circana Executive Director and Video Game Industry Analyst Mat Piscatella. "Nintendo Switch 2 sales were able to offset double-digit percentage declines across each of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Switch."
"NBA 2K26, Mobile, and Nintendo Switch 2 drove 11% spending growth in August when compared to a year ago, helping lift total projected spending across video game hardware, content and accessories to $4.7B."
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller was the best-selling accessory in the US in both units and dollar sales for both August and 2025 year-to-date.

NBA 2K26, which released a month earlier this year, debuted in first place and is the fifth best-selling game of 2025. It was the best-selling game on both PlayStation and Xbox.
Madden NFL 26 debuted in second and is the 10th best-selling game of 2025. It is also in the EA Sports MVP Bundle and EA Sports Kickoff Bundle, which came in eighth and ninth places, respectively. It was the second best-selling game in August on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, while it came in first on the PC charts.
Mafia: The Old Country debuted in third place, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater debuted in 4th place, Gears of War: Reloaded debuted in sixth place, and Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar debuted in 19th place.

But… I was told that NS2 sales were slowing down WW?? (Also, this month marks the highest August hardware spending since 2008. Very good figures all around!)
You can check each month on this website. It would be nice to know exactly how much the consoles sold this month.
Machina and I are working on the estimates for August. Hopefully we will get them posted today.
We will see what the difference is for September as well as that data will be released in two weeks on Oct. 22nd.
It is slowing down WW though. This data suggests that US numbers are ~320k and with NA all in should be less than 400k which is lower than July's 502.9k. Japan went from 379.5k in July to 255k in Aug and will be lower in Sept . Europe in July was 336.8k and with shortages happening there especially in Spain will be lower than that. So WW in August will come in substantially lower than July's 1594.8k thus slowing down WW.
Yes but already 8.5M Switch 2 until end of August. In 3 months. And Dont forget to combine Switch 1 and 2 numbers please as Spain example.
Any console slows down in August, its one of the weaker hardware months of the year. Worrying slowdown would be if it sells badly during October-December.
Sure, in the technical sense it’s “slowing down” because a console cannot maintain launch window sales indefinitely.
I feel like you’re intentionally misinterpreting what he’s saying though. Before launch there were people who said it was priced too high and wouldn’t sell well then it broke records and the argument became the typical “it’s just Nintendo fanboys who buy anything and sales will drop!”
The implication was that sales declining would be from low demand rather than settling into a post-launch baseline, which is what is happening.
You got to wait for some actual numbers before boasting “I told you so”
Why should wait when its getting even more obvious that Switch 2 is the real deal?
Nothing is stopping the doomsayers to embarass themselves, even before these recent updates. I say: Lets expose their bs!
No Mario Kart World on Switch software top 10 is concerning. Seems like Nintendo lost their flair and gatekeeping fun. (Personally I like the open world and straightaways but it is too little too late in terms of appeasing the fans) .
Or we use our brains and tell ourselves that bundle sales are just not taken into account.
That may be true, but it is speculation. Even so, Mario Kart World isn’t on the August listing.
Is not, Mat P. says this every time because people ask why MKW is so low or absent.
Idk who Mat P. Is, but as I said your stance is speculation. The fact is that MK World isn’t on the top 10 for August.
And i repeat is not.
Mat Piscatella is the Senior Director & Video Game Industry Thought Leader at Circana, the site where these statistics come from, so he knows what he's talking about.
New Update: 80% of US Switch 2 hardware includes the MK World bundle.
US sales is ~2.4M units as of Aug 2025, meaning in the U.S. MK World has sold 1.92M digital download copies.
I’ll continue this 80% and focus on just Aug, hardware 312,029.
MK World has sold 249,623 digital download copies.
That sounds rather healthy for a game of such history.
I suspect it would have been near #2 in Aug.
no helldivers on xbox, something is off there.
