VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Wonder why this gen sales are so much down vs ps4/xbox one.

PS5 must have sold a huge amount in mainland Asia and Middle East (~170k), because in Japan alone it sold only ~40k in the whole month. Since when is this the case, that PlayStation sells more in rest of Asia than in Japan? I really wasn't aware that the difference is so huge.

What I would find interesting:

How does the year-to-date time frame of 2022 (yes, 22) compare to PS5's 2024 globally?

I wonder if 2024 is either up or down.

Fiscal year '22 was indeed quite a strong year of 19m units eventually.

I believe it would be up in the region of 30%. None of the comparisons are very good though, 2025 will be the first year where PS5 year on year stats are largely normalised.

before I comment…you are aware there was a shortage of PS5 until up until January 2023, correct?

If we compare fiscal year 2022 has a good chance to win. If we go for calender year, 2024 will win. The difference in Europe after 9 months is only 35k though.

Exactly my point. FY’23 (4/1/2022-3/31/2023) was strong b/c over 6mil PS5s shipped during Q4 (Jan -> Mar 2023). If the shortage had not resolved, PS5 would’ve like sold just over 15mil FY’23, which (for reference) is less than NSW in all but one year. Not to say PS5 did poorly during 2022, though I struggle to see YoY increase from Sept 2022 as anything of value. Especially when there was a shortage…and now there’s not.

Yes, I am.

It's just comparing data. But ofc I'd know about the context of the data.

I could open two doors then:

• PS5, '22 vs '24, year-to-date.

• PS5, FY '22 vs FY '24.

I was initially just wondering about if, although vs. '23 PS5 numbers are declining, how it holds up against '22, wether year-to-date nor fiscally.

No sophisticated thingy behind on my behalf. Just curious about comparing data.

Hey people, why are you not using the tools of the site for these types of data ? the hardware by date is so easy to use .. Other than that I have thread that is called year on year charts, where you could see those things there as well.

My bad, you're right. I apologize.

I sometimes just struggle to navigate tbh, but I guess that's definitely an end user problem.

I think the financial report in 2 weeks time will say that as of September 30th Nintendo will have shipped around 146 million Switch's. Maybe just under. Then come the Feb 2025 report I think they'll report that as of December 31st they've shipped just under 152 million Switch's. The May 25 end of financial year report I think they'll report shipping just over 154million Switch's and confirm they've outsold the DS.
