[Update] Borderlands Movie Bombs at the Box Office With $8.8 Million Domestic Opening - News

Update:

The global figures for the opening weekend for the Borderlands movie are now available and it grossed $16.5 million worldwide (via IGN). That breaks down to $8.8 million at the domestic (US and Canada) box office and $7.7 million at the international box office.

Original article:

Lionsgate Movie and Gearbox released the Borderlands movie in theaters over the weekend and the movie has bombed.

The movie had an opening of just $8.8 million at the domestic (US and Canada) box office, which was enough for it to debut in fourth place. It was available in in 3,125 theaters and had a production budget of $115 million.

Movies tend to need to earn 2 to 2.5 times the production budget to break even, which means the Borderlands movie need to earn at least $230 million to not lose money.

The Borderlands movie is sitting at 9 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and has a 50 percent audience score.

Thanks, Variety.

Expected, that movie seemed bad right from the first script and casting call leaks in 2020. You can't just totally ignore the plotline of the games, cast comedians as serious characters, cast people who are like 30 years older than the character, etc., and expect fans to flock to see the movie.

Don't care how little Randy Pitchford had to do with this movie, I'm still blaming him. Guy is a disaster for anything to do with Borderlands.

Even if the movie was good... why would you ever compete with Deadpool 3?
Both are Comedy/Action movies so people are obviously going to choose Deadpool over Borderlands...

Should have done the WB thing and just tax wrote it off, even though I hate the practice. One day we might see Coyote vs Acme.

The documentaries about how this movie happened are going to be more interesting than the movie itself.

Saw the trailer when we went to see Deadpool. Asked the wife if she was interested, she said, "No. It looks terrible." Said the same thing about the new Alien, too. Guess I won't have to pay for the movies again for a few months, haha

damn, I had some hopes for Alien Romulus but when I went to see Deadpool 3 they run the trailer of Romulus and even though I didnt want to watch it as to not spoil anything, there were some glimpses and I only saw children, children in an Alien movie. Jesus!
Now I only wonder how bad it will be.

One of the main characters in aliens is a child. From what I've seen of trailers there aren't any children as main characters in this.

I feel bad for Edgar Ramirez (blue jacket guy in the back). The guy's a talented, underrated actor but his picks for roles just haven't been good in the last few years.

I never played the games but I saw trailers because unskippable ads. It looked cheap and terrible. It didn't even look like a modern film a but a low budget film from 2007 filmed on a green screen. Just awful.

That image in the article above is so clearly on a green screen sound stage that it looks like it came from a Geocities wallpaper maker site. And why do all of the actors look like they just stepped out of the shower, got their makeup and hygienics and put on perfectly clean clothes from the laundromat? They're in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but no one has a speck of dust, dirt, grime or sweat on them. Nothing is stained.

Everything about this movie screams phoned-in trash. I've never played Borderlands and have nothing against the IP, but I'm glad this movie bombed hard. I can respect things like Uncharted and Assassin's Creed that at least tried to take themselves seriously, but this was a joke from stem to stern.

With the terrible reviews it has received, this is not surprising.
