The people over at Famitsu got a chance to play Capcom’s title Monster Hunter 3 sometime earlier this month. The game will be on sale on August 1st in Japan. Those involved were limited to the single player mode, however they were able to play the game at length starting off in Moga Village, and moving in to Moga Forest, a so called area shrouded in mystery. From this hands on session the team gathered detailed info about Monster Hunter 3’s single player mode.
Moga Village and it’s Facilitie
s As stated above the single player mode is based out of Moga Village. In this bustling village set on a solitary island, there are wooden houses lined up over scaffolding that floats on the water along with docks were several boats are anchored. This rustic setting surrounded by light and wind, forest and sea, where time flows slowly by. A day and night cycle exists in Moga Village, and Moga Forest which is accessible from there. Many unique characters are living in the village. Let’s take a look at them beginning with the two people that are most representative of the place.
The Chief
As his title clearly states this man is the leader of the village. He is esteemed not only by humans but also the Dragon Folk, Sea Folk and many other races who make up the local populace. To discover the cause of the mysterious earthquakes that are occurring in the area the chief has gone through the Guild to call forth a hunter to the village. The Chief’s Son
In place of the aging chief this young and great man shoulders the burden of the village’s business affairs. Much like his father he is kindhearted, a skillful swimmer, and a first class fisherman. At present his greatest duty is managing the resources taken from Moga Forest. Moreover, as a precaution to protect the villagers, he has plays an important role by establishing close ties with the hunters who come to the village. The Chief’s son is a character the player will frequently come in to contact with. He is also the person who manages the resources acquired from Moga Forest. Resources, apart from money, are used to vitalize Moga Village and can thus be gotten by hunting monsters and gathering items. This will be explained in detail later on.
Moga Forest
Moga Forest is an expansive wooded region that can be directly reached from Moga Village even when not on a quest. A hunter can enter the area whenever they wish to collect the items needed for resources, hunt monsters, and so on. In Moga Forest there is no time limit like when on a general quest. In other words you can stay to hunt, fish, mine and do what you want for as long as you want. Moreover, there is no penalty for running out of energy in the forest. After camping out again you can continue to walk along as usual. This is probably the place that most remarkably shows how the look of Monster Hunter 3’s world is more in depth, and how it feels like you are in the middle of a living environment. From time to time however, large sized monsters appear in the forest. The player can talk with the chief’s son to get an idea of what type of monsters these are.
Quest Counter
A hunter can be shown quests through the quest counter. A quest is an official job request for a hunter through a special organization know as the Hunter’s Guild. For each quest an objective is determined. The player must achieve this objective within a set amount of time to clear the quest. At the quest counter there is an information guide from the guild. Talk to her to accept a quest.
The Guild Information Guide
This is a lively girl who returned to her hometown of Moga Village after traveling to the city to study as a intermediary of the guild. She is an exceptionally hard worker, but due to the village’s location in a remote region there are times when the support of hunters is hard to come by. In spite of this difficulty she is able to overcome problems because of her positive nature.
The Farm in Moga Village
From the main square in the village cross the bridge and you will find a farm. Talk to the Farm Head and you can use resources to increase your stock of plants, insects and other ingredients. The Farm Head and the Airuu At the farm in the village there lives an easygoing Dragon folk elder. Along with little beasts called Airuu he grows the vegetables and grains the villagers eat. The Farm Head has known the Village Chief for longer than any of the other villagers and has watched over him since they were children. With regard to hunters the Farm Head helps out by providing vegetables and grains that are useful for hunting monsters.
The Hunting Vessels
The Hunting Vessels docked in the village’s fishing port are another place where hunters can find work. Once the job details and destination are settled, the hunter travels in the boat to a designated area to fish. Of course time and certain resources are first needed, but many other resources can be attained from the boats’ large hauls.
The Fishing Port Proprietress
She is the owner of the fishing fleet found in Moga Village’s fishing port. The Hunting Vessels, built by the skillful hands of the sea folk, are capable of bringing in fish and even monsters. While the Proprietress tenderly watches over her fleet and frivolous crews, she also keeps an eye on sea conditions from the port’s tower to plan the day’s fishing. Talk to her to find work fishing on the vessels.
Trade Vessels and Trade Deals
Special goods acquired in town can be traded for useful hunting goods brought in on Trade Vessels, or other items used to help vitalize the village. The Trade Vessel and its Captain The Captain is a Dragon folk and old sailor friend of the Village Chief. Clad in the traditional garb of the East he has with him his beloved broadsword. Having fulfilled his long life dream of owning an ocean going ship, he lives out his days traveling the world looking for trade. Sometime his Trade Vessel comes to Moga Village where precious items and goods from around the world can be traded for.
My House
The residence where the hunter lives is known as My house. More than ever the My House in Monster Hunter 3 has been created to have a lived-in feel right down to the interior amenities. If you talk to your Airuu servant you can redecorate the house with an interior item or recover them to use later. There is a large variety of interior items that can acquired through ways such as trade. At your house items and weapons the player has can be managed through a convenient and easy to use Item Box menu.
The Dining Hall
By having a meal in the Dining Hall a temporary status bonus called a “meal skill” can be attained. In the actual game food ingredients are measured by “freshness”. Using two ingredients produces a meal that can be eaten, and depending on the freshness, skills become easier to get. Moreover, it is possible to choose the cooking method in addition to the ingredients. The cooking method also effect what kind of skills become available. By the way the food charge can be paid with either money or resources.
