VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Incredibly constant Switch sales! Every week counts 46k :-)

Mh, again I am wondering why there are always these different numbers in use.

Front page says 434k PS5's.

In the other article it says 474k PS5's in the text, even mentioning it's a number even without UK, Germany, etc., so quite possibly way over 500k?

My head really can't catch up of why we just can't have one specific number for one particular time frame that a month is.

The 474K figure in the other article is for all consoles combined and not just for the PS5. Plus it's missing sales numbers from the UK, Germany, and several smaller countries in Europe.

Sorry, my bad.

Mh, but why even re-publish it then? I can understand to use it to calculate estimates.

But this specific data seems to be quite useless, because its missing up to ~50%, depending of the month, of the final estimates/data.

The first two months of 2024 in Europe result in a 5:1 ratio for the PS5 to Xbox Series S/X.

My estimation: That's very likely, even after only two months, going to be the overall selling ratio throughout the whole year in Europe. Maybe it'll settle somewhere between 4 and 4.6, but that's it.

Insane console generation, and I don't mean positively insane only.

They will make sure to release some of their games on other platforms while continuing to keep their flagship licenses exclusive to their ecosystem. Especially since in addition, Xbox wants to continue selling hardware.

There's nothing to gain by keeping anything exclusive now. They don't care about hardware they just want people buying their games and subbing to Gamepass. They will only release another console because they can't get Gamepass on PS/Nintendo. So they have to release another one cos it will be the only console with Gamepass on it. They will use the sales from PS to boost their studios and just say "but why buy it for 70$ on PS when you can just sub to Gamepass". Very obvious this is what is happening now

According to Phil Spencer no game is off the table. We don't know what games they will bring over. From the reports they also seem to be doing this whole process very privately as well.
