VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

do you think the switch will sell another 35+ million?

This is kind of a reply to both of you. I don't think he was being salty. It's not unreasonable to think the switch will stop at 3rd place.

And on the other hand, it could yes. It's slowing down, but it's still possible. It all depends on when the successor is announced/launched. Price drops haven't happened yet. And an OLED switch lite seems like something that should happen. Although if it hasn't happened by now, maybe not.

So it could go either way. 145 million is probably the low end for the final numbers. 155 is on the high end but still possible.

I wouldn't count out a pointless revision like a switch OLED lite. I mean the Gameboy micro launched at the very end of the Gameboy advance life.

Good point. That was even after the DS. So who knows.

Agreed. The most important factor is the timing of Nintendo's announcement of a successor. If said announcement doesn't come within 2023 then I think the Switch can scrape the number 1 spot. If they announce it around autumn this year like I feel they might, then it'll close the gap but it wont surpass DS or PS2as sales will drop too much.

They would almost have to replicate the switch launch for there to even be a chance. So like no announcement until late into the year and then a spring release in 2025. But it's impossible to predict at this point.

That was always my assumption based on the statements they have made multiple times about an 8 year lifespan and being halfway through the life around the 4 year mark. But sales and momentum can always change the plans. I'm sure the chip shortage played a factor as well.

The numbers reported so far are only up till the week ending the 10th. There are still 2 Christmas run-up weeks to track which will no doubt put the Switch on at least 121 million by the end of the year. Sales of 35 million+ are very possible, as whilst the Switch is slowing down, it still has healthy momentum, particularly for a console this late in its lifespan. March 22 to mid December 22 it sold near 18 million, by end of December that'll be around 20 mill, end of financial year (end of Mar 23) that'll be around 22 million at least putting the Switch around 123/124 mill sold to date. If Nintendo doesnt announce a successor in 2023 and they introduce a price cut, then with those factors, combined with a strong games lineup (Zelda, Metroid Prime 4, Pikmin 4, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, continued waves of MK8D tracks and whatever else Nintendo has up their sleeves) the Switch has a strong chance of selling the 35 million units it needs from April 23 onwards in order to surpass the DS and PS2. If Nintendo announces a successor this year, then even if said successor doesnt launch until next year, i dont think Switch will beat either of them.

It's getting really close if Switch will reach 20M this calendar year. We need 900k on average in the upcoming 3 weeks.
