Switch 2 Ships 23.68 Million Units as of June 2026, Switch 1 Ships 156.59 Million - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 06 August 2026 / 10,561 Views

Nintendo has released its latest hardware and software figures for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1 through June 30, 2026.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has shipped 23.68 million units to date, while 58.17 million Switch 2 games have been shipped lifetime.

Shipment figures for the Nintendo Switch 1 reached 156.59 million units, while 1,561.95 million Switch 1 games have been shipped lifetime.

For the quarter ending June 30, 2026, Nintendo shipped 3.82 million Switch 2 units and 0.66 million Switch 1 units shipped.

Breaking down the 23.68 million lifetime shipped figure for the Switch 2, it has shipped 7.95 million units in the Americas, 5.37 million in Europe, 6.70 million in Japan, and 3.66 million in the rest of the world.

Breaking down the 156.59 million lifetime shipped figure for the Switch 1, it has shipped 59.80 million units in the Americas, 40.14 million in Europe, 38.55 million in Japan, and 18.09 million in the rest of the world.

The regular Nintendo Switch model accounts for 97.75 million units of the total Switch consoles shipped worldwide. The Switch OLED accounts for 32.23 million units and the Switch Lite accounts for 26.61 million units.

Nintendo's forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027 remains unchanged and has the Nintendo Switch 2 at 16.50 million units shipped and the Nintendo Switch at 2.00 million. If Nintendo reaches the forecast exactly that would put Switch 2 lifetime sales at 36.36 million units and the Switch at 157.92 million units.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has sold through over eight million units worldwide as of August 5.

The Switch 2 has outshipped the GameCube 21.73 million units this quarter.

3.41 million to go until the Switch hits 160.

To put this a little more into context â†' last year the Switch sales shrunk considerably because of the Switch 2 release, but this year those numbers have levelled off and the erosion isn’t as much as before. As the Switch gets closer to the 160m mark now, the gap is shrinking by higher amounts. The winter quarter closed it by 11.9%, the Summer quarter by 16.2%. It’s just a matter of time when that number rises to 100% as the remaining units are sold (I mean, it probably won’t be a spectacular boom, likely something closer 0.15m when it crosses the line).

That’s barring unforeseen factors.. or even some of the foreseeable hypotheses like an uptick in Switch demand because of competing platform price increases. And really, Switch is no longer just a Switch, it’s a Switch ecosystem entry tier device.

CourageTCD Jumpin (on 06 August 2026)

What are these percentages?

  • 0
Jumpin CourageTCD (on 06 August 2026)

The percentage is how much closer the Switch got from the previous quarter totals to the current quarter totals toward crossing the 160 million mark. So, the 16.2% means it crossed 16.2% of the distance (or 0.66 is 16.2% of the 4.07 million gap last quarter). The fact that this percentage is rising Q over Q is a result of the total number of console sales getting smaller faster than the decay of the shipments… in short, the Switch’s current trend is toward crossing the 160 million mark.

To give a quick and dirty model:
Calculate an erosion trend by averaging the shipment decay each quarter. You can update this every report.
Make column 1 your total shipped and column 2 your quarterly shipments. Trend column 1 by adding the current q quarterly shipments to the previous q total shipped. Trend column 2 by making each quarterly shipment multiplied by your decay constant.
Then in column 3 plug =SUM((QYSales/(160-QXTotals))*100) which will provide the percentage I’m talking about for historical trends and the predictive model.

Note, curves in the trend are negligible at this stage since they tend to balance out when dealing with numbers so small relative to the total; where the real deviation will occur is noise and less predictable events (Switch 2 and PS5 price increases which will impact Switch 1 sales, Nintendo’s increasing brand power, the Euro battery law implementation and how many of the lost customers will turn to foreign shipments, etc…). If you want, you can make a fourth column for hypothetical adjustment estimations.

HebrewGamer 2zosteven (on 10 August 2026)

It's gonna be tough with the price hikes. They've hurt the sales of some of their games like DKB, Metroid Prime 4, and AoI pricing them at $70 and MKW being $80. MKW sold 14.5m by the end of 2025 and has only moved 1 million in 6 months since. That would be awesome for Xenoblade but terrible for Mario Kart being only a year on the market. They'll need additional content to make MKW a proper evergreen title. They got some hits with Pokopia, Splatoon Raiders, and Tomodachi life which is actually helping with Switch2 sales as well according to Nintendo's financial report. Rhythm Heaven looks to be a regional hit for Nintendo.

$80 is going to be a bridge to far for the casual audience they need to do the big numbers of Switch1. Fortunes Weave should not be $80. Nintendo may want Fire Emblem to be a tentpole franchise but the market says no. Much of Splatoon raiders success is because it's priced right. Unless you're GTA or Pokemon, these $80 game shenanigans are going to kill these company's numbers.

Something worth noting, at 1.562 billion software sales and counting, the Switch 1 has surpassed the PS2's software total of 1.537 billion.

Switch 2 sales will slow down after September price hike. Nintendo won't discount Switch 2 on black Friday & Christmas 2026. It will sell worse next year when price increased to $599.99

trunkswd xl-klaudkil (on 06 August 2026)

We will see. 0.66 million is better than we were expecting. And if that remains steady for the rest of the fiscal year Nintendo would actually beat its forecast.

PAOerfulone xl-klaudkil (on 06 August 2026)

Not quite yet. It's still very much in play.
0.66 million is higher than just about everyone was expecting, and with the upcoming price hike for Switch 2, that's going to make Switch 1, with its massive library, a much more attractive entry point for younger players/teens and parents on a budget by default.

I think it all depends when Nintendo will end the production of Switches globally.
The PS2 had a 13 year lifecycle, I know that was another timeline & a different company but the sales figures are similar and I don't know a better way to estimate it.
I'm sure Nintendo would like to overthrow the No1 for long term reputation for decades to come, so for now I predict Nintendo will end the production of Switches in 2030 globally, giving the Switch a better chance of beating the PS2.

Isn't PS2 sold 160.63 million? Still 4 million to go, Europe production will be discontinued next year. Likely will only reach 158.5 million lifetime

  • +1
00Xander00 Rhyno_888 (on 06 August 2026)

A portion of Europeans (who would have bought Switches if production didn't end in Europe) will import Switches from America & Japan as Switch games are region free. This could boost American & Japanese sales a bit after March or slow the decline of American/Japanese sales at least which would allow Nintendo to keep the production of Switches in circulation in America & Japan for a bit longer than they would have if they never ended the production in Europe.
Also I predict Nintendo will ship a lot of Switches to Europe over the Christmas quarter so retailers will keep selling them after March.
I also predict Nintendo will have shipped 158.12m units by Dec 31st 2026 (roughly +0.5m by Sept 30th & +1m by Dec 31st).
They will then need to ship 2.52m units over 3 years (2027, 2028 & 2029) which is very possible if they end all production in 2030 (but it all depends on when they'll end all production of Switches worldwide).

  • +2
Rhyno_888 00Xander00 (on 06 August 2026)

I think Switch 1 production will cease around 2028 worldwide. It would cannibalize Switch 2 sales if they keep selling Switch 1. And keep producing for Japan only until 2029. Nah they won't ship that many Switch 1 to Europe

  • 0
00Xander00 Rhyno_888 (on 07 August 2026)

You could be right. 2028 & 2029 feels more accurate than 2030, but I don't think the Switch cannibalising Switch 2 sales will be the reason for ending Switch production because Switch 2 sales aren't being hindered enough to stop Switch production atm. Plus less and less Switches will be sold as time goes by making the hinderense on Switch 2 sales less over time.
I think their decision will be based on the point when Switch 1 sales drop below a certain threshold (but I don't know what that threshold is, you could be right about it ending in 2028 in America & 2029 in Japan). But the reason why I predicted 2030 was due to the PS2 sales being very similar and that had a 13 year lifecycle, but Sony is different to Nintendo and that was another timeline so you could be right.

Scoopz Rhyno_888 (on 06 August 2026)

No. Sony manufactured 160.6 PS2s they didnt ship or sell all of that number as a percentage of manufactured consoles are kept back for testing, for use as replacements and to act as display units. Thats why Sony say its sold over 160 million but they havent specified as they dont actually know. Nintendo just needs to ship 160.1 million to be able to evidence greater sales.

If they shipped 160.6 then it would be irrefutable.

Well Sony will just update their PS2 lifetime sales on their website to 160.63 million. They are scared to be dethroned

  • +3
Scoopz Rhyno_888 (on 07 August 2026)

They wouldnt be able to at this stage because then theyll have to explain why that wasnt the official update in the 1st place 2 years ago.

The increase from 155 to 160 mill 10 years later you can excuse. But not a subsequent update. Its not like they were waiting on additional sales lol

Nintendo just has to ship 160.1 million consoles to be the demonstrable leader as it will be a modern occurrence with a reliable audit trail.

To shut up Sony stans theyd have to ship 160.6. But to sources like Guiness Book of World Records theyd no doubt be happy with proclaiming Switch 1 as the record breaker with an audit trail for 160.1

PS2 is officially at 155 millions as there's no official confirmation(audit) for the superposed 160+ number.
The 160 millions is just a mouth words a Sony executive throw on the internet to save face in the wake of Switch 1 closing to much of the official PS2 number.

I would assume Tomodachi's release a few months ago greatly boosted the Switch numbers for the quarter. I'd guess there will be significantly less Switches sold this summer quarter. And then europe production is stopping next year right. Also remember this is systems shipped, a decent amount en route or sitting on store shelves around the world.

The Switch 2 price being so high is definitely helping to keep the Switch alive, although somewhat surprisingly since the Switch already increased in price. Tomodachi I think breathed a last breath of air into Switch as a post-life major hit. But even with the Switch price hikes, the Lite at what like $230 or something is by far the best console buy for parents looking to get their kids any modern system, since despite not being cheap it is hundreds of dollars cheaper than anything else.

This quarter makes it feel like for the first time 160m could potentially be achievable, but I'm guessing that's just cuz of the one-time Tomodachi boost and likely next quarter sales will be down to like 300k or something and next year quarterly sales will probably be like 200k and dropping, so maybe 159k is doable but 160k might be just a little too far.

Agreed, tomodachi is the last first party nintendo game for Switch 1. Next year Switch 1 will get nothing, people won't buy Switch 1 anymore. People who buy Switch 1 nowadays are mainly CFW gamers

SuntannedDuck2 Rhyno_888 (on 07 August 2026)

Rhythm Heaven Groove released after it and is a Switch 1 only game I know as it's the game I was looking forward to for this year and only have a Switch 1, have been playing for the month alongside retro games, and has been out since July 2, 2026. But Tomodachi Life had more noticeable appeal to people.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream released April 16, 2026, Rhythm Heaven Groove was literally a few weeks before Splatoon Raiders for Switch 2 which came out July 23, 2026. Rhythm Heaven Groove on July 2 2026.

Both Rhythm Heaven and Tomodachi Life were in the same Direct even.

Rhythm Heaven has been a 1st party title aka a Wario Ware sister series you could see it as but is it's own thing just a rhythm minigame format since the GBA, with DS, Wii, 3DS and Switch all being available in the west. Just pointing it out. Not angry just saying you missed a game. Encase forgot that's ok. It is a niche series that's usually middle or end of a generation type release anyway just Groove being one of the last releases is a surprise.

Fever on the Wii was 2012 but not sure what else was 1st party 2012, Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition or Project Zero/Fatal Frame 2 on Wii was 3rd party of course but published by Nintendo so. Kiki Trick also seems to be one, from the SPD team in 2012.

Anyway. It can be hard to pinpoint sometimes and me moving on to the other part.

I'd say collectors if they don't have certain coloured versions but yes most likely CFW audience for sure. Unless people just didn't get a Switch 1 for some other reason it's less common to be the case as it'd be 2nd hand and not 1st hand market sales.

Well you are very knowledgeable. I never heard about rhythm heaven game. Probably under the radar. Anyway not my kind of game. Everyone has different tastes in games.

Yeah CFW (piracy) is very high for switch in developing countries. Very late in this gen well, Nintendo kinda like selling consoles to "pirates". Stopping production is the way to go as soon as possible, to force people to buy NSW2

Bizwas (on 06 August 2026)

Can anybody put the 2,5 games bought on average by every Switch 2 owner after the console has been out for a year into perspective? As such I would think that is not a lot (taking into account this includes all the shovelware and dirt cheap e-shop offers, not only full priced Nintendo games), but maybe it is actually a good number for a first year? Of course, if they only count Switch 2 exclusives and not backwards compatible Switch 1 software (even though bought on a Switch 2) that would change the picture a lot.

Doesn't Nintendo only report retail sales?

  • +1
Bizwas SanAndreasX (on 06 August 2026)

For the weekly/ monthly sales charts we get from Famitsu, Games Sales Data (GSD) & Co that is correct, but for Nintendo's own reports I am sure they include everything.
EDIT: In the discussion thread on this topic people say digital sales are only counted for games that also have a physical edition, so maybe I am wrong.

  • +1
Bizwas Bizwas (on 07 August 2026)

A bit extra info by Nintendo themselves on the software sales numbers:

They include:

  • the quantity bundled with hardware or other products.
  • the downloadable versions.
    But:
  • Packaged versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition software are included in Nintendo Switch 2 software sales units, downloadable versions are included in Nintendo Switch 1 software sales units.

Taking me as an example, I have bought 8 games on my Switch 2 in the year that I have had it, and 5 of them will count as Switch 1 game sales.

  • 0
Slownenberg Bizwas (on 06 August 2026)

I would say Switch1 games obviously count toward their Switch 1 software sales, it doesn't matter what system a Switch1 game is bought for it's still a Switch1 game.

Not sure if they count digital-only games, like do they count every little $5 indie game in these sales or not? At the very least it should be every digital+physical copy of any game that got a physical release on Switch2, and maybe it includes all digital-only Switch 2 games as well but not sure about that.

Anyway, attachment rate is typically very low in the first year or so of a system, though not sure how 2.5 fares. As it means a decent amount of the total userbase only just got the system in the last few months and plenty of those people are only gonna have one or two games for the system. Also probably a bunch of people got it last year and only have Mario Kart and maybe one other game as there hasn't exactly been much in the way of big next-gen games on the system yet (the system still doesn't have a single killer must-buy game, closest thing to that would be MKW but from critiques of the game I would say that doesn't even quality). And there's probably a decent amount of people who upgraded just to have the latest thing and still mostly play their Switch1 games on it and maybe bought Mario Kart and that's it.
