PlayStation VR2 Won't Support Backwards Compatibility with PSVR Games

PlayStation VR2 Won't Support Backwards Compatibility with PSVR Games - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 16 September 2022 / 3,935 Views

Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president of platform experience Hideaki Nishino in the latest episode of the Official PlayStation Podcast announced PlayStation VR2 will not be backwards compatible with PlayStation VR games.

"PlayStation VR games are not compatible with PlayStation VR2 because PlayStation VR2 is designed to be a truly next-generation virtual reality experience," Nishino said.

"PlayStation VR2 has much more advanced features like an all-new controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, as I’ve said, and inside-out tracking in it, 3D audio is coming together, 4K HDR of course. So this means that making games for PlayStation VR2 requires a whole different approach than the original PlayStation VR.

"These features actually enable developers to create worlds that feel more vivid and alive, and bring players closer to the experience than ever. I believe that."

PlayStation VR2 is set to launch in early 2023 with over 20 major first-party and third-party titles. ne confirmed first-party title is Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla Games and Firesprite.

Thanks, Gematsu.

Seems like a missed opportunity.

That sucks. I don't own the first PS VR but I was considering this one to play the new games + the older catalog. This decision makes me doubt Sony when it comes to support in the future for this type of games so I think I'll pass on this.

The tracking method is completely different. So this was expected. Still, I was hoping they’d figure a workaround.

But the only one that I could think of is for the developers to make a PSVR2 patch for the titles they wish to keep selling for the new device.

I do wonder whether this'll be a situation where Sony is playing it on the safe side in their communication but most popular games will in fact be patched to work? Or if Native PS5 ports will be needed but most games will have a free upgrade

Trentonater Otter (on 17 September 2022)

the developers with the resources to do so will almost all want to port their games over. it's just too complex to make a universal backward compatibility solution. they did mention how it's easier to port from pcvr now.

Somewhere it was posted that about 150 games will have patch for PSVR2.

I guess their inputs are too different for direct compatibility. Hopefully legacy titles will be patched to support the new hardware, at least popular ones like Astro Boy and Beat Saber.

All he said doesn't look like should prevent BC per see, at most it would demand that you still have an external camera perhaps.

Why would anyone want to play wonky ass PSVR1 games when PSVR2 is finally powerful enough to run most proper AAA games in VR? People say there won't be any games but what about RE4, Village, GT7, MW2 and hopefully loads more incoming with likely a free psvr2 update?

For the most part, it wasn't until PS2 came around that we all started expecting this feature. So for those of us old enough to remember, new hardware lacking backwards compatibly is not a big deal. You're getting new hardware that can do exciting new things. Why WOULDN'T you want new games to go along with it?

Plus, I'm sure most people who like VR will hold onto their original collection and system.

Because you wont just be getting new games; they will be selling you old PSVR games with updated PSVR 2 control.

This is true. But if they're better looking, and take advantage of the superior hardware, AND you kept your original VR... what's the foul? Just don't sell the original VR. That way you have options.

Well well well that sucks hard

That's a silly move.

I feel there will still be some games that will have PSVR2 patches to address the updated controls and the way it tracks. It would have been cool to have instant PSVR performance boosts using the 5 and VR2 like how the 5 does for some 4 games but i can understand why it doesnt.

They could have made it work if they wanted to. All VR headsets operate the same.

Hynad Azzanation (on 16 September 2022)

No. They don’t all use light sources as their means of tracking.

  • 0
Azzanation Hynad (on 16 September 2022)

Than patch the games to work. For the players right?

  • +1
Hynad Azzanation (on 16 September 2022)

This will be handled on a case by case basis, depending on the developers who made the PSVR games. If they want to make them compatible for PSVR2, the games will need to be greatly reworked. It’s not a simple switch you toggle like you think it is.

And you keep trolling again and again. My gosh you’re petty, irrational, and have no objectivity. Will you ever grow past this state of mind?

Xbox did it with the XB1 BC, so if Sony really cares, they would do it for PSVR1 games. Its also a much smaller library to port over unlike what their competitors had to deal with. Simply patch the games to work.

Trolling for pointing out facts? Man it gets pretty low in these forums with some of your comments.

Xbox tested the games ran on their emulation, they didn't individually port titles over.

VR is a complete different beast as they're based off different input which is not at all universal across headsets/controllers. You can't just make up information that doesn't exist or translate data that is not 1:1

You have no facts. Your trolling and bias are sad.

Trolling for putting "for the players, right?" after yet another display of your ignorance.

So have MS made a way for you to play your Kinect 1 and 2 games on Series X and we aren't informed of it?

Much agreed for every word of this post. He is speaking out of his arse about things he clearly knows nothing about, and his blatant bias is pathetic.

I’ve heard several people predict no BC, bc there will be so many differences. I would like to hear you expound on your statement. You’re stating this as though it’s fact, so please provide some detailed facts how what you say is true.

Wait so you are telling me its impossible to get PSVR2 to run PSVR1 games?
