
Call of Duty: Vanguard to Have 'Significantly' Smaller Install Size on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 27 October 2021 / 1,260 ViewsPublisher Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games announced Call of Duty: Vanguard on the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC will have a "significantly" smaller install size thanks to new on-demand texture streaming technology. The new technology is expected to save 30 percent to 50 percent of storage space on the next-generation console and on PC.
"Good news for hard drives everywhere: Vanguard’s install size at launch will be significantly below previous Call Of Duty releases," said the developers via Twitter. "New on-demand texture streaming tech expected to save up to 30%-50%+ on next-gen console and PC hard drive disk space."
Call of Duty: Vanguard will launch on Friday, November 5 for the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Battle.net.

That's pretty spectacular, especially for a franchise notorious for eating storage space.
That texture data has to come from somewhere... Is it going to be streamed from the cloud or optical disk? How are internet connections going to keep up with 10's of Gigabytes worth of data?
Or are they doing their own compression algorithms and decompressing on a per-needs basis?
I don't care about space, but I do want the option of having the entire experience installed if the data is streamed from the web.
For sure they have dedicated decompression. And this might reflect Activision utilizing that more than they had in the past, and perhaps even implementing custom in-software solutions for last-gen systems that mimic them (with the concurrent CPU performance hit).
For sure we don't know, but it's at least a semi-reasonable theory. :)
Sounds good on the surface but we'll see how big the game file balloons after a year or two.
